Quick Hits: June 7, 2019
1) Flyers 2018 first-round pick Jay O'Brien has officially committed to the BCHL's Penticton Vees for the 2019-20 season. By playing at the Junior A level -- an amateur league -- O'Brien will retain three seasons of NCAA eligibility come 2020-21.
2) The 2019 Flyers Alumni Golf Tournament will take place at Dupont Country Club in Wilmington on June 27. 3) Congratulations to former Flyers COO Shawn Tilger, who has moved on the next chapter in his professional life after being hired as a senior adviser at GF Sports. Speaking from a personal standpoint, I will always be grateful to Shawn for the opportunity he gave me to be a content provider for the Flyers. Shawn's passion for his work and for the Flyers was always evident from the moment you met him. He was with the organization for many years, serving variously as vice president of marketing and communications, then senior VP of business operations and then five seasons as COO before resigning his post.
4) Today in Flyers History: June 7, 1995
In Game 3 of the 1995 Eastern Conference Final, the Flyers trailed 2-1 until the latter stages of the third period when Rod Brind'Amour knotted the score. Finally, at 4:19 of overtime, Eric Lindros took a cross-ice pass from Mikael Renberg and wired a shot from just above the circle past Martin Brodeur to cut the Flyers series deficit to two games to one.
The game was tied at 1-1 after the first period after Kevin Dineen quickly responded to a Claude Lemieux goal. Randy McKay restored a one-goal lead for the Devils at 2:53 of the second period, setting the stage for the Flyers’ dramatic late comeback victory in the third period and OT. Winning goalie Ron Hextall stopped 31 of 33 New Jersey shots while Martin Brodeur turned back 22 of 25 Flyers’ shots.
