Post Battle #25 vs. the Detroit Red Wings (Blue Jackets)

Final Score: Blue Jackets 4 – Red Wings 1

Game Summary

The streak is over. Like all good things it must come to end and the Detroit Red Wings were the team to do it, ending the Jackets run of games at or above a 50% Corsi. The Jackets had 11 straight games prior to this at 50% or better. The Jackets did however manage to pull out a 4-1 win, in large part to the great performance from Sergei Bobrovsky.

Bobrovsky was very strong in game, stopping 32 of 33 shots. Detroit outplayed the Jackets for large stretches but Bobrovsky was there to stifle their opportunities. His .970 save percentage is his best non-shutout performance of the season. Bob was particularly strong at the end of the game when Detroit had their goalie pulled. They were generating a whole bunch high end chances, and Bobrovsky had to make a couple highlight reel saves. His only blemish in the game was a power play goal by Dylan Larkin. Larkin was everywhere, his best chance came off a rush where he completely walked around Markus Nutivaara, but again Bobrovsky was there to shut it down.

Despite Detroit’s 33-25 shot edge, the Jackets made the most of their opportunities, and at 5 on 5 actually out chanced the Wings. Cam Atkinson kicked off the scoring, not with a 5 on 5 goal but with a short-handed one. Larkin’s shot was directed to the boards by Bobrovsky, Atkinson was right there to get it and with his speed he was off on a two on one rush. He looked off Brandon Dubinsky and fired it top shelf.

Atkinson was not done there picking up an assist on the second goal. This was a very weird sequence leading up to this goal. Petr Mrazek comes out of his net and covers up the puck. The refs do not whistle it dead so Mrazek plays the puck. He rims it up the boards right to David Savard who throws it back on net; Atkinson makes an incredible tip to Dubinsky who puts home his third of the season.

Also having multi-point games were Lukas Sedlak and Sam Gagner. Sedlak scored the third goal, his first in the NHL. Gagner had the puck and just shovelled it towards the net. Sedlak was right there in front of Mrazek to put the rebound home.

Gagner got the final goal, an empty-net goal which he scored from his own end of the ice. His 11th of the season gives him the team lead in goals. That was Gagner’s fourth multi-point game of the season, which is fifth on the team.
