Players to watch in tonight's preseason matchup with Buffalo (Conor Sheary)

Today the Pittsburgh Penguins will travel to Penn State to take on the Buffalo Sabres in the first preseason action of the year. This will be the team the Penguins will be putting on the ice per the Penguins official website.

Forwards: 26 - Agozzino 46 - Aston-Reese 53 - Blueger 56 - Haggerty 47 - A. Johnson 37 - Lafferty 34 - Legare 42 - Miletic 11 - Palve 22 - Poulin 17 - Rust 12 - Simon Defensemen: 76 - Addison 7 - Czuczman 3 - J. Johnson 73 - Joseph 6 - Marino 50 - Riikola 2 - Ruhwedel

Goaltenders: 1 - DeSmith 35 – Jarry

I can’t lie, there’s not much there to get excited about. The veterans who played on the team last year we already know about and tonight’s game isn’t (shouldn’t) change perceptions of those players. Perhaps the lone exception would be Juuso Riikola who had a really bad first season in the NHL. You see chatter about him having a lineup spot, but his underlying numbers were just as bad as Jack Johnson. He needs to start showing some positive signs if he wants to be in the discussion for a regular spot in the lineup. Riikola isn't a young prospect either. He will be 26 in November. The time is now to make a dent.

I am looking forward to seeing Calen Addison, Sam Poulin, and Nathan Legare in action. It’s a nice check point in their development to see if they can keep pace with some NHL talent. Calen Addison is the most intriguing of the bunch due to him being the closest legit prospect the Penguins have to impacting the NHL roster. They will get a taste of some legit talent this evening as the Sabres plan on playing some of their better players.

Forwards 9 Jack Eichel 13 Jimmy Vesey 22 Johan Larsson 27 Curtis Lazar 28 Zemgus Girgensons 42 Dylan Cozens 43 Conor Sheary 52 Andrew Oglevie 53 Jeff Skinner 71 Evan Rodrigues 72 Tage Thompson 81 Remi Elie

Defense 6 Marco Scandella 8 Casey Nelson 10 Henri Jokiharju 26 Rasmus Dahlin 33 Colin Miller 44 Brandon Hickey 58 John Gilmour

Goaltenders 34 Jonas Johansson 40 Carter Hutton

Jack Eichel, Jeff Skinner, and Rasmus Dahlin are as legit as it gets. I’d love to see if Addison can tread water against some of those guys. You also have former Stanley Cup Champion Conor Sheary on the roster for tonight’s game. Dylan Cozens was the Sabres first round pick this year and should be notable to watch for the same reasons I listed Addison, Legare, and Poulin above. Henri Jokihariu and Jimmy Vesey will don the Sabres crest for the first time this evening.

The game will be streaming on both the Penguins official website and the Sabres official website at 7PM.
