The Oilers have placed Mark Fayne on waivers for the purpose of assignment to the AHL.
The team has also assigned Jesse Puljujarvi to Bakersfield.
Fayne's place on the depth chart is unsurprising. He was *fine* in preseason action, per usual. He was neither amazing nor awful. I believe he can play in the NHL but he's a 5-6 on a team heavy with 5-6 defenders who are cheaper.
He did something to get on the wrong side of the coaching staff and he's been there ever since.
Jesse Puljujarvi's demotion is more notable. During the summer, Peter Chiarelli mentioned that he expected JP to be a member of the Oilers this season. So on some level the plan was for the former 4th overall pick to make this squad.
Puljujarvi's preseason was a mixed bag. He pivoted between being very prominent offensively and being invisible. I would count him among the group of RWs that didn't take advantage of the open spots beside Draisaitl and McDavid.
I don't think Caggiula stood out either, but he was an Oiler for the majority of the year and was along for the ride in the playoffs. That gives him the spot by default.
Frankly, I'm not excited about the RW position with this team.
