Quick update, Filip Zadina has been called up to Detroit. It seems his efforts have not gone unnoticed. Here’s hoping he can make an impact. Thanks to RafiDRW for a heads up :
When Taro Hirose deflected a shot past Louis Domingue, it seemed Detroit had caught an enormous break. New Jersey had been the more aggressive team, and Bernier had held the Red Wings in. 36 seconds later, the Devils tied it up and started down the road to their much deserved victory. Taylor Hall went deep into the Red Wings zone after the puck and found Kyle Palmieri who tied it up. Almost five minutes into the third period Palmieri was establishing net position when a shot from Will Butcher was deflected in by Madison Bowey. Yes, it was a good bounce, but the opportunity was created by New Jersey competing. That second goal turned out to be the game winner.
Jeff Blashill made a “bold… move pulling Bernier with almost five minutes left in regulation as Detroit was down 3-1. Even Detroit’s commentators thought this was a bit early. Taylor Hall cashed in on the empty net. The final of 5–1 served to boost the spirits of New Jersey and serve another cold cup of coffee to Detroit.
New Jersey, to this point, has underperformed this season. In part, goaltending has been a bane for them. Louis Domingue played a solid game for the team and the confidence that came from that was palpable. Taylor Hall was aggressive on the forecheck, and all of New Jersey was willing to mix it up and make for an uncomfortable night for Detroit.
The loss wasn’t the only bit of bad news. Anthony Mantha left the game with what looked to be a knee injury. The team can ill afford to lose their top goal scorer. Detroit had opportunities, but looked like a team that was unable to find a way.
The road doesn’t get easier for Detroit as they face off against Carolina tonight at 7 pm. The Hurricanes served up a 7-3 loss on November 1st and could well match that effort today. Detroit would need many things to go the right way to stay competitive in this one. More than anything, they have to buckle down and stay out of the penalty box tonight.
The 3 game win stream and 5 game point streak seems miles away at this point. This young team will need to dig deep to find a reversal of fortunes to avoid another 10 loss in 11 game set. Injuries are mounting and the fragile mindset seems evident once again. It is up to this young squad to reverse the trend and rewrite the stats on the fly.
