Mattheos undergoing cancer treatment, will miss training camp (Hurricanes)

The Carolina Hurricanes have announced that Stelio Mattheos will miss training camp while he completes treatment for testicular cancer.

Mattheos was diagnosed with cancer two days after winning the Calder Cup with the Charlotte Checkers. He underwent surgery, has completed multiple courses of chemotherapy treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.

“I’d like to thank everyone who reached out to offer support and well wishes since the diagnosis,… said Mattheos. “I’ve had amazing support from my friends, family, teammates, coaches and all of the hockey organizations I’ve been a part of, including the Hurricanes, Checkers and Brandon Wheat Kings.

“I owe a debt of gratitude to my surgeon, Dr. Sabeer Rehsia, and all of the staff at Grace Hospital, as well as Dr. Piotr Czaykowski at Cancer Care Manitoba and all of the nurses on the chemotherapy ward.…

Mattheos, a third-round pick in 2017, had an excellent year with Brandon in the WHL before joining the Checkers in time for their playoff run last season.

Best wishes to Stelio on a quick and successful recovery.
