With Wednesday, January 13 as the rumored start date, players playing in Europe or living outside of Canada have begun to head to their respective home cities in anticipation of the start of training camp. Those on the seven Canadian clubs have to quarantine up to 14 days before being able to participate. For the Toronto Maple Leafs, GTA area players like Mitch Marner, Zach Hyman, John Tavares, Jason Spezza, and newcomer Wayne Simmonds have been working out at the Ford Performance Centre. Others like Nick Robertson stayed in Toronto during the offseason, and Frederik Andersen and KHL import Mikko Lehtonen got into town well in advance, but those not present should be on their way this week with camp likely starting at the beginning of January.

Rasmus Sandin and William Nylander were still in Sweden as of last week , while Auston Matthews has been skating with Connor McDavid in Arizona. On Monday, veteran Joe Thornton began making his way to Toronto. The 41-year-old veteran played for HC Davos in the Swiss League and scored 11 points (5 goals, 6 assists) in 12 games and is expected to slot in as either a bottom-six center or as a spot player being moved up and down the Leafs lineup.
