Hey hockey world. Did a lot of math today (in Excel) so lets look at the results…
There is no question that the 8 playoff teams in the East are all solid. I would go as far to say we many have never seen a better group of playoffs teams in one conference…It’s not hard to look and see how ANY of the 8 could win a Stanley Cup.
With these teams being this good, its even more important to look at the matchups and who would rather play who? The matchups could very well determine who ends up in the Cup finals…So what I did today was look at all 8 teams and how they competed against each other over the last two years…(three years I’d they only had one or two games against each other over the past two years)

Points Percentage vs. the Other 7 (The percentage of points gotten versus available)
#1. Pittsburgh 61% #2. Boston 59% #3. Carolina 58% #4. Florida 57.3% #5. Toronto 57.2% #6. NY Rangers 55% #7. Washington 50% #8 Tampa 50% Goal Differential vs the Other 7 #1. Carolina +20 #2. Pittsburgh +11 #3. NY Rangers +10 #4. Florida +7 #5. Toronto -2 #6. Boston -5 #7. Washington -12 #8. Tampa -26
Tampa -26?? Tampa has a minus goal differential versus 6 of the other 7. They are -10 versus Florida including their playoff series last season.. Tampa only has a positive goal differential against Carolina. This could mean the two time Cup Chamos may have their work cut out to get back into the Finals.
Teams with Dominance over other teams… (The percentage of points gotten versus available) 1. Carolina over Boston 100% The Canes have outscored Boston 16-1 in three games 2. Boston over Tampa 83% 3. Back tomorrow with the West breakdown…many more teams alive and fascinating matchups.
