The Toronto Maple Leafs are expected to make some roster moves before the March 21st trade deadline, some that would be considered major transactions and others that would be more of the tinkering variety.

On Wednesday, the Leafs added a player they are very familiar with, as the club reclaimed center Adam Brooks off of waivers from Vegas. Brooks was placed on waivers as part of the club’s cut down prior to the start of the regular season in early October and claimed by the Montreal Canadiens. The 25-year-old Winnipeg native played four games for the Habs before being placed on waivers for the second time in November and claimed by the Golden Knights.

Brooks had eight points (4 goals, 4 assists) in 17 games as a Leaf and was well-liked by their management and coaching staff based on his success with the AHL Marlies and in his limited play in the NHL. Had the Leafs reclaimed him and no one else put in a claim, they would have been able to send him down to the AHL without going through waivers a third time, but according to TSN’s Chris Johnston, he is on the NHL roster.

The benefit of the re-acquisition of Brooks is not only his history and familiarity with the club but that he is making under the league minimum $750,000 in the final year of a two-year deal signed with Toronto in 2020, which is invaluable for a club right up against the cap.

It is expected that the Leafs in the coming weeks will deal winger Nick Ritchie to another club to clear more than half of his $2.5 million salary not already buried since his demotion to the AHL last month. *******
