LOIP The Most Innovative Advanced Stat Yet (Advanced Stats?)

Best LOIP?

This obscure advanced stat is one that I plan to personally track and subsequently profit from. My newly patented Laying On Ice Percentage is a way to track defenseman and how many lays per minute they have accrued over the course of a game. For most; when you go down to the ice, it’s an act of desperation. For some, it is a disastrous art form. A go to. A way of saying…I really don’t know how to defend so just come at me! I was prompted to track this after watching the most embarrassing play I’ve seen in a long time by one Cody Ceci. If you didn’t get a chance to watch that game or the highlights; let me fill you in.

Ondrej Kase of the Ducks has the puck. It’s not in a dangerous zone. He’s not even in a particularly dangerous area. Cody Ceci has him. He’s right on him. Kase would need a miracle to do something useful with the puck. Enter said miracle. Ceci…in an act of utter bafflement…drops to the ice like he’s been shot and halfheartedly waves his stick as Kase dances around the now useless Ceci to score a beautiful goal. Ceci had NO reason to drop down. The other Duck near the slot was completely covered and taken out of a scoring threat. Anderson was in perfect position covering the left side. All Ceci had to do is STAND THE HELL UP AND GET IN KASE’S WAY. You can tell everybody on the ice is just stunned at how ridiculous that play was.

Seeing that play was painful and completely emblematic of the terrible run Ottawa has had. Yet it also just shows that some players who are generally considered as “Shutdown Defenseman… don’t really get what that’s supposed to mean. Falling down in many situations is just being caught out of position.

So let’s look at some of the leaders of LOIP from last night.

Cody Ceci : 5 + 1 à· 21.41 x 100 = 28.02%

Kris Russell : 4 +1 à· 22.01 x 100 = 22.71%

Brook Orpik : 3 + 0 à· 22.19 x 100 = 13.51%

Now what we can extrapolate using this scientific method is that clearly Brooks Orpik had the best game of the three. This is definitive and there is no way to possibly contradict my method of discernment. To even question the outcome is tantamount to barbarism. One percentage is clearly lower than the other two and being lower means better, ergo, Orpik was better. Any other factors are anomalous and can be chalked up to variant luck factors and chance component instrumentality.
