Kubalik on the move (?) and Sandin Pelikka playing for undefeated Swedes (Red Wings)

With Shane Pinto on his way back to playing in Ottawa, there is talk that Kubalik will be moved by the trade deadline. Unfortunately, it is the Blue Line that needs the most attention currently. Kubalik would be a welcome return, to be sure, but doesn’t address Detroit’s greatest issue currently.

Axel Sandin-Pelikka on the other hand is part of an unbeaten Swedish squad (as of 12/30) a 3 and 0 record with 100%PK on 7 attempts against. Game 3 was vs team Canada.

As I look forward, Axel, Edvinsson, Mazur, and Nate Danielson (unfortunately part of the Canadian squad defeated by Sweden but has 1G and 1A in 3 games) all are prospects that bring something to the table, or at least have that potential. Mazur may well be part Pit Bull, Edvinsson we’ve had some glimpses of, Danielson didn’t look out of place at camp and Sandin-Pelikka could well force his way into a roster spot if his defensive play translates to North American ice.

Some of you may share this thought, I expect Edvinsson to take a spot next year in the NHL. Danielson, if he’s really got the defensive capability has decent size as well and can add to the stock at center. Whatever happens to finish out the season, there is a lot to be enthusiastic for moving forward.

Full disclosure, if Detroit upgraded the defense before the deadline I wouldn’t be upset. The problem is that the Forwards have to be a part of the system as well and it’s a mixed bag right now on defensive prowess across the team. We’ll see if the team looks good against Boston after a much needed overtime win over Nashville.
