The Los Angeles Kings dropped the final game of their five-game road trip tonight, losing 4-3 to the Washington Capitals.

Alex Edler re-entered the lineup for the Kings after missing two games with an injury, with Sean Walker coming out of the lineup as a healthy scratch.

Los Angeles managed to strike first early in the second period, as Sean Durzi came down towards the net to take a pass from Viktor Arvidsson and beat Darcy Kuemper. Then later in the period, Arvidsson set up a second goal, finding Phillip Danault in front for a tap-in, to put Los Angeles up by two. After two periods, the Kings had done a pretty good job preventing a lot of quality chances and took a 2-0 lead into the second intermission.

Things took a turn in the third period though, and just minutes into the frame, Nic Dowd fired a shot past a screened Jonathan Quick from in-close, cutting the lead to one. Then only a minute later, John Carlson entered the zone and beat Quick with a pretty weak shot that Quick would certainly want to have back, tying the game. Then before the halfway mark of the period, Dmitry Orlov found Lars Eller with a nice cross-zone pass and he scored with a well-placed shot. All of a sudden, the Capitals had the lead.

Viktor Arvidsson continued his strong game though, taking a pass from Trevor Moore on an odd-man rush to tie the game. However, Washington responded only about four minutes later, with Marcus Johansson scoring off a wraparound to reinstate the Capitals’ lead. The Kings weren’t able to retaliate in the final few minutes, and fell 4-3.

It’s a really disappointing result for the Kings, blowing a two-goal lead in the third period. The game completes the team’s road trip but to not even get a point in this one, now dropping below .500, is especially tough.

After doing a good job limiting shots through the first two periods, the Kings let Washington back in the game in the final frame. Quick allowed a couple weak goals but also faced 17 shots in the final frame.

Following a blowout loss and now a blown lead, Los Angeles has lost all momentum from their three-game road winning streak.

The Kings will be back in action on Tuesday, when they host the Tampa Bay Lightning.
