KHL has always been the league to want to catch NHL and this time around - they are attempting to catch them in stupidity. Right now it's August 29th - three days until the brand new KHL season gets underway, two before the annual pre-season board of directors meeting that will be held on August 31st.
Per request of the Russian Hockey Federation league will re-visit their point system and belief amongst many involved with the decision making for the KHL are convinced that league will switch to the model of NHL's point system.
KHL wants to build a mostly visual competition between the teams awarding two points for a regulation victory.
Juris Savickis - KHL Board of Directors member and Chairman of KHL's Dinamo Riga team had his own take on the matter:
''The system has to be changed so the games get more intense and interesting, this is a fact. The standings will be much closer because we will see more battles. I think that this will also attract new fans.''
The three-point system in Russia was introduced before 1993./94 hockey season while the NHL has always had a two-point system.
The KHL season will get underway on September 1st with the season opener between Gagarin cup winners AkBars Kazan and regular season champions SKA St.Petersburgh
