To celebrate Latvia's 100th years KHL has awarded the capital and team that represents the league in the country - Dinamo Riga to host an outdoor game on January 20th, 2018.
The game will be played between Dinamo Riga and Dinamo Minsk teams, a long time rivals at the top level of European hockey.
Spoke to Dinamo Minsk’s head coach Gordie Dwyer to hear his thoughts on the event.
Coach Dwyer: I'm excited for the event! It's a great way to celebrate the game of hockey. It’s a wonderful event to showcase the league, for both team's fans but also an opportunity to reach a new fan base and continue to grow the game.
When asked if he has ever taken part in an outdoor game Dwyer’s response was short but fair: Dwyer: I haven't had the opportunity to be part of an outdoor classic game before. I'm truly looking forward to the experience.
‘’As for the game itself, considering the atmosphere, I'm sure both teams will be energized and the game very competitive’’: he insisted. Adding that execution will be a factor especially with the outdoor environment and ice conditions.
‘’A great experience for all involved and hopefully a new tradition for years to come. Congratulations to all responsible for realizing this special event.’’ He said.
Event will be held in Riga Council's sports complex with stands being built for around 8500 spectators as well as other things to improve infostructure so the game could be played without any issues.
