The 0-1-0 Panthers will take on the 0-1-0 Jets in a Saturday matinee game in Winnipeg today.
It was a disappointing loss to open the season on Thursday night when the Cats fell to the Minnesota Wild by a score of 0-2. Nothing worse than being shut out — especially when you out-shoot the opposition 41-21 (literally doubling their SOG).
Despite the loss, there were some positives from Florida’s play. They dominated the first period, but had the classic hockey misfortune of one team controlling the play, while the struggling team comes down and nets a lucky one.
Although losing some speed after trading Duclair, Florida looked like they were the faster team on Minnesota ice. The guy who stood out most to me was Evan Rodrigues. The guy can play. I was a little surprised by the contract he received, but if he can stay at this level, he’ll be worth it. Even OEL looked like he still has some gas in the tank. Samo tie rookie looked quick and sharp as well. Excited to see him get more experience.
For a team that went all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals last season, it’s hard for me to be overly critical after one game. Having said that…putting 41 shots on net and not finishing at least one of them is frustrating.
The Jets have resigned Conor Hellebucyk and Mark Schifele to long-term deals and will be looking for a big bounce back after dropping their game earlier this week to their Canadian rival in Calgary.
I assume Bob will get the start today, but I would really like to Stolarz in the blue paint — not only for that great pad setup — but to see his playing style more closely.
Don’t be surprised if Samo gets a promotion. I saw he was practicing on the second line yesterday.
Let’s make it 1-1-0 today…GO PANTHERS!
