The game did even out a bit in the second period, with the Sharks spending a bit less time in their own end. While the Rangers hit a couple posts on a power play midway through the frame, neither team could capitalize once again.
San Jose really got outplayed in the third period though, being outshot 16-4 by the Rangers. Then late in the frame, New York finally broke the scoreless tie with six minutes to go, as Julien Gauthier tipped in Jacob Trouba’s point shot. San Jose pulled the goalie to try and tie it later but couldn’t even get out of their zone and Adam Fox extended the lead. The Sharks did break Igor Shesterkin’s shutout off a goal from Logan Couture with 15 seconds left, and then even had a final good chance off a rush in the dying seconds, but the Rangers hung on for the 2-1 win.
The Sharks were outplayed through the majority of the game, being outshot 43-23 in the loss.
Despite the loss, it was a great game from Reimer, making 41 saves. Even aside from the sheer volume of shots he faced, he made some pretty excellent saves and was the reason San Jose was still in the game.
It’s still unfortunate though to get so close to making it through regulation after hanging on but giving up a goal late in the third. The Sharks have now dropped two home games in a row, with the final matchup of their three-game homestand coming tomorrow against the Ottawa Senators.
