The New York Islanders announced today that they’ve signed defenseman Samuel Bolduc to a two-year contract extension, which carries an $800,000 cap hit.
Bolduc is just 22 years old and played 17 regular season games with the Islanders this season (as well as two playoff games), registering three points. While he did spend the majority of the season in the AHL, it marked the first NHL action for Bolduc.

Bolduc’s size is an asset, standing at 6-foot-4, but he’s also proven able to contribute offensively, scoring an impressive 35 points in 56 AHL games last season. Next season, it’ll be a matter of how big of a step he can take.
With the new deal, Bolduc will no longer be waiver-exempt. As a result, we can be pretty much certain the defender will be a permanent member of the blue line going forward. The good news is New York’s top-four group could still more or less solidified even if Scott Mayfield doesn’t return, so Bolduc will continue to be in a sheltered role for the foreseeable future.
