The New York Islanders came away with a victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets last night, winning 4-3 in overtime.

Columbus then struck first early in the second period, with Cole Sillinger burying a rebound on a power play. The game really opened up after that, with New York getting, but also giving up quite a few quality scoring chances. The Islanders tied the game a little later in the frame, with Scott Mayfield finding Brock Nelson in front with a great pass for a tap-in. Only a few minutes later though, Emil Bemstrom got in alone on a rush, going to the backhand to beat Ilya Sorokin. However, the Islanders were able to draw even again in the final minute of the frame, with Nelson burying a rebound for his second goal of the game.
The Blue Jackets went back ahead in the third period, with Marcus Bjork ripping a slapshot by Sorokin for his first NHL goal. New York was able to draw even once again after sustaining some offensive zone time only a few minutes later though, as Scott Mayfield went to the backhand to beat Joonas Korpisalo.
The game then continued to overtime, where Jean-Gabriel Pageau got the puck over to Zach Parise with a great pass on a 2-on-1, who beat Korpisalo before he could get over, giving the Islanders the extra point.
Once again, New York fell behind and managed to battle back. It was an important win though, bouncing back after letting some points slip away against the Arizona Coyotes at home on Thursday.
It was also promising to see the Islanders outshoot Columbus by such a margin (46-29) but they also gave up a lot of quality chances. Ilya Sorokin had to be really good, especially in the second period, with New York having a few breakdowns that led to rush chances for Columbus.
We're also seeing quite a discrepancy between who’s contributing offensively though, so it’ll be interesting to see if that continues or starts to even out to an extent. Mathew Barzal, Anders Lee and Brock Nelson each have at least 15 points this season, with New York's next highest-scoring forward at eight points (with four different forwards tied at that number).
It’s an important two points for the Islanders though, getting up to a 10-6-0 record. New York’s next game comes tomorrow, as they face the Ottawa Senators.
