Ice melts, Wings game cancelled (Red Wings)

Well, that’s one way to keep a winning streak going.

Monday’s game which saw the Detroit Red Wings slated to visit the Carolina Hurricanes was postponed when a technical problem with the ice making equipment left the ice unplayable.

“We had a feeling pretty early that it probably wouldn’t be a game,… Detroit captain Henrik Zetterberg said. “But we have to wait to be certain, I guess. Just with the problem with the ice, I don’t think it was enough time for it to actually fix it.

The biggest concern was the safety for the players to go out and play on the ice that wasn’t ready for us.…

Zetterberg indicated that the players noted during the morning skate that the ice wasn’t up to snuff.

“It was bad this morning but sometimes we step on a little bit too early and don’t let it freeze and we thought that was the issue,… Zetterberg said. “But now, it was probably bad already this morning.…

With Detroit slated to play in Tampa Bay against the Lightning on Tuesday, there was only so far that the scheduled 7 p.m. start time could be pushed back before the game would need to be called.

“I think there were some deadlines obviously for us to get this game in and get to Tampa, too,… Zetterberg said. “I heard 9 o’clock or 9:30 was the latest we could have played. But I guess we didn’t have to.…

Baseball Mentality Sitting around the dressing room wondering what to do to kill time, the Red Wings felt more like the Detroit Tigers.

“It was like a rainout in baseball,… Detroit coach Jeff Blashill said. “They were doing some fun things back here.

“I don’t know if they had full uniforms on but they were pretty close to being fully dressed, ready to go. It was pretty close to warmups and then a little after 6, that’s when I found out. Guys had some gear on for sure.…

Zetterberg indicated that the players sought to stay loose, assuming that the game ultimately would be played.

“I think probably 15 minutes before warm-ups we got the news that the ice wasn’t ready, so we got undressed again and just killed some time,… Zetterberg said. “We played a little different games, played some two-touch. Just tried to keep our bodies warm.…

In all his years in the game, this was a first for Blashill.

“I’ve never been a part of it,… Blashill said. “I think in the end the number one priority when you’re dealing with ice conditions is the safety of the players, the safety of the referees, and I think it was determined we couldn’t get the ice conditions to a point where we could have that safety in the amount of time needed because of the fact that we’re playing tomorrow as well.…
