The Carolina Hurricanes announced yesterday that they’ll be retiring Eric Staal’s No. 12 next season.
The Hurricanes had simultaneously announced that they’d signed Staal to a one-day contract, for the forward to retire as a member of the organization.

Originally selected second overall by the team in 2003, Staal played 909 games with the Hurricanes across 12 seasons, scoring 322 goals and 775 points. He captured a Stanley Cup with the team in 2006, and served for seven seasons as Carolina’s captain. Staal holds franchise records in games played, goals and points, since the team’s relocation to Carolina.
Upon departing the Hurricanes at the trade deadline in 2016, Staal spent stints with the New York Rangers, Minnesota Wild, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, and Florida Panthers. His international achievements include a World Championship Gold Medal with Canada in 2007, and an Olympic Gold Medal in 2010.
Staal will be the fourth player to have his number retired by the Hurricanes.
