Brett Pesce looked to have extended the lead for Carolina early in the second period, but we saw a second goal called back due to an offside. The Oilers took advantage of the call, with Derek Ryan going down the other way and beating Andersen to make it 2-1. Edmonton really controlled the frame after that, outshooting Carolina 16-6 in the period, but Carolina remained up by a goal after 40 minutes.
After a pretty slow first half of the frame, the play picked up a bit in the back half, with some better chances going both ways. Despite the Oilers pressuring late, the Hurricanes held on for the 2-1 win.
The Hurricanes have been on a roll and this marks the team’s fifth straight win. Despite Edmonton starting to take over in the second period after Carolina dominated the opening frame, the Hurricanes rebounded for a pretty defensively-sound third period. Carolina’s penalty kill was key as usual, going 4-for-4 against Edmonton’s second-ranked power play.
Frederik Andersen also continues his dominance over the Edmonton Oilers, now sitting at 17-1-2 against the Oilers over his career. He made 29 saves and was key in the back 40 minutes.
Teuvo Teravainen also extended his point streak to eight games, having scored four goals and 11 points in that stretch.
The Hurricanes remain first in the Eastern Conference, now at a .750 points percentage. Their next game comes on Tuesday against the Detroit Red Wings.
