Carolina came out a lot stronger in the second period, outshooting Pittsburgh 16-8. They managed to pull back to within a goal early in the frame, with the puck popping out to Jordan Staal, who put it into the open net. The Hurricanes were all over the Penguins through a lot of the rest of the period but some excellent saves by Casey DeSmith kept the Penguins’ 2-1 lead intact after 40 minutes.
Once again in the third period, the Hurricanes really controlled the frame, limiting the Penguins to just five shots. Then after Carolina continued to get great chances, Jordan Staal finally tied the game, redirecting a point shot past DeSmith. After neither team could break the tie in the back of the frame, the game went to overtime.
In the extra frame, Kris Letang took a penalty and Carolina took advantage, as Andrei Svechnikov tapped in a rebound to secure a 3-2 overtime win.
This was a fun game, and one where the Hurricanes looked great through a lot of it. They managed to come back from being down two goals after the first period and outshot the Penguins by a huge 42-24 margin. If it weren’t for Casey DeSmith, the game likely wouldn’t have even gotten to overtime.
I’ve mentioned it before, but Jordan Staal has really found his game offensively over the last month or so. He’s scored six goals and 10 points over his last 12 games, after scoring just two goals and 11 points through his first 41 games of the year.
It was a nice bounce back from the Hurricanes, after they didn’t look great in Washington on the first half of their back-to-back. Carolina remains first in the Eastern Conference in points percentage.
The Hurricanes’ next game comes tomorrow against the Seattle Kraken, as they play the second game of their four-game homestand.
