Chicago is on their annual quest for a top-six forward rental.
Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman added Antoine Vermette in 2015 before the deadline and did the same last February with the trade for ex-Hawk Andrew Ladd.
The name of veteran Jarome Iginla has been out there, but the future Hall of Famer's $5-plus million salary would be challenging to fit under the already tight Hawks cap. Other more inexpensive options are more likely. Arizona will likely shop the inexpensive Radim Vrbata ($1 million) before Mar. 1, but pending UFA Thomas Vanek could be the perfect fit for Chicago.
Vanek averaged 20 goals in two seasons with Minnesota before being bought out last June and is having a solid season with Detroit.
The Red Wings may be poised to sell off some of their expiring contracts before the deadline and the 32-year-old winger's $2.6 million cap hit would be easier for Bowman to make room for.
