Incredibly sad day for the hockey world as Gord Downie, lead singer for the Tragically Hip, has passed away today at only 53. There has always been such a strong connection between this man, this band, and Canada. We have seen so many musicians pass away this year, but none was linked more to hockey than Gord Downie. His name even sounds like a hockey player, doesn't it?
Everyone I have talked to today, people I didn't even know were Hip fans, have talked about it and how Gord Downie was Canada's poet.
In so many ways The Tragically Hip and Hockey share a culture.
Both are so very woven through Canada's culture, both have defined a society and a people, both are made up of many great and kind individuals and perhaps more than anything BOTH the Tragically Hip and Hockey are way, WAY better than most Americans realize.
I hope the guys in the band find some way to continue on and if you aren't familiar with Gord Downie and the Tragically Hip here in America I hope you can check it out and spread the word...
