The Flyers claimed goaltender Calvin Pickard off waivers by the Toronto Maple Leafs earlier today. He is temporarily designated as a non-roster player; likely pending confirmation of him passing a physical and joining the team. Before he'd become waiver eligible again for an AHL assignment, the Flyers would have to make him available to a reclaim by Toronto (assuming no other teams claimed him initially). After 30 days or 10 games, whichever comes first, he'd be subject again to the waiver process before an AHL assignment, whether reclaimed or not.
Pickard will wear No. 33 with the Flyers.
The 26-year-old Pickard spent most of last season in the American Hockey League for the Calder Cup winning Toronto Marlies, although prospect Garrett Sparks handled most of the playoff duties. Pickard appeared in one NHL game for the Maple Leafs last season; a 4-3 overtime loss at Colorado on December 29. Previously, Pickard spent five seasons with the Colorado Avalanche organization. He appeared in 86 NHL games for the Avalanche, posting a 28-44-6 record with a 2.77 GAA and a .914 save percentage. The Avalanche lost Pickard to the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2017 Expansion Draft. Vegas then flipped Pickard to the Maple Leafs.
Both Taylor Leier and Dale Weise cleared waivers on Tuesday. The Flyers assigned Leier to the AHL's Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Weise, who practiced with the team on Tuesday, is still with the NHL team. However, once Pickard is added to the NHL roster, the Flyers must make another roster move to get down to the 23-man limit. Since goaltender Anthony Stolarz was NOT placed on waivers, the Flyers must either send Weise to the Phantoms or otherwise delete a player for the NHL roster.
On another note: Oskar Lindblom has changed uniform numbers from No. 54 to No. 23 and Mikhail Vorobyev has swapped his training camp No. 46 for No. 24.
The Flyers practice tomorrow at City National Rink in Las Vegas at 12:30 p.m. local time.
