The Anaheim Ducks were shut out by the New York Islanders last night, losing 4-0.

New York extended their lead early in the second period, with Casey Cizikas burying a nice pass from Ross Johnston, to extend the lead. Despite the Ducks limiting chances after that, they still couldn’t capitalize in the frame and the Ducks remained down two goals heading into the second intermission.

It was more of the same in the third period, with the Ducks outshooting New York 13-8 in the period. However, Andy Greene put the Islanders up 3-0, beating Anthony Stolarz with a nice shot and then later, Josh Mahura just let Kieffer Bellows poke the puck by him in pretty brutal fashion and Bellows scored, securing a 4-0 Islanders win.

The Ducks had some good chances in this one and the loss didn’t come from a lack of generating chances. They probably should’ve been able to capitalize on a few of their opportunities, though Ilya Sorokin was pretty excellent as well.

On the flip side though, while the Ducks only allowed 22 shots, that doesn’t reflect the quality of chances they gave up. There were lazy backchecks, defensive zone breakdowns, a lack of intensity, and Anaheim deserved to give up the goals they did.

So the Ducks have now dropped two of the three games of their homestand so far. They needed to capitalize against the Islanders, who are having a rough go and were in the second half of a back-to-back. Anaheim is now down 11th in the Western Conference in points percentage and their chances of the playoffs are looking slim at this point.

The Ducks’ next game comes tomorrow against the Boston Bruins.
