Dom Is An Ideal Sub

Dominic Turgeon’s second tour with the Detroit Red Wings will begin against the same team as the first. Turgeon will face the Chicago Blackhawks Thursday at Little Caesars Arena. He made his NHL debut Jan. 14 against the Blackhawks at Chicago’s United Center. Turgeon played four games and then was reassigned to AHL Grand Rapids on Tuesday, only to be recalled Wednesday, as left-winger David Booth was sent to Grand Rapids. “It surprised me a little bit,… Turgeon admitted to Detroitredwings.com. “I got sent down the day before, then I got the call right after that to come back up. I’m trying to make the most of it.… One area where Turgeon can certainly help the Wings is on the penalty kill. He was one of the top penalty killers for the AHL Griffins and that’s an area of the game that continues to plague the Wings with key penalty killers Darren Helm and Justin Abdelkader both out of the lineup through injury. “I thought Dom played well overall,… Detroit coach Jeff Blashill said. “I thought three of the four games he played real good in doing what he needs to do to be successful. “To get in the league, he’s going to have to be a real good two-way center, he’s going to have to be a real good penalty killer. I thought he showed those signs. I thought he won battles. He’s never going to be super, super fast so he’s got to make sure he’s real strong on his stick and wins tons of battles.… With Luke Glendening returning to his role on Detroit’s shutdown line, Blashill also needed a fourth-line center and Turgeon fit the bill. “I started last game with Luke Glendening in the fourth hole,… Blashill said. “I wanted to ease Luke in. I didn’t want to even be tempted to start him above that. By the end of the game, he was playing up in a match line situation against the (Claude) Giroux line and was a real impact like he has been lots of the year playing on the wing, and I wanted to leave him up there today. “In order to leave him up there and not take Double-A (Andreas Athanasiou) off his line and not do that kind of thing, I needed a fourth-line center. Certainly David Booth has played very, very well for us, worked his butt off for us every day, but in this case I just wanted a fourth-line center.
