The New Jersey Devils trimmed down their training camp roster today by waiving winger Brian Gibbons and defenseman Brian Strait (tough day for the Brians!).
Strait actually had a decent preseason but he shouldn't be more than the 9th or 10th defenseman in an organization and I think the Devils realize that.
Gibbons did not play overly well -- the Devils fared much better without him on the ice -- and there was a lot of competition for spots up front so it's certainly no surprise to see him waived, either.
Assuming they are sent to the AHL when they clear waivers, which seems like a safe bet, the Devils will have 27 players remaining on their roster.
Forwards (17) - Joseph Blandisi, Jesper Bratt, Blake Coleman, Taylor Hall, Jimmy Hayes, Adam Henrique, Nico Hischier, Marcus Johansson, Nick Lappin, Michael McLeod, Stefan Noesen, Kyle Palmieri, John Quenneville Drew Stafford, Miles Wood, Drew Stafford.
Defensemen (8) - Will Butcher, Andy Greene, Ben Lovejoy, John Moore, Mirco Mueller, Dalton Prout, Steve Santini, Damon Severson.
Goaltenders (2) - Keith Kinkaid, Cory Schneider.
I think Michael McLeod, Blake Coleman, and Nick Lappin are good bets to be cut with the final decision coming down to Blandisi or Prout (depending if the Devils want to keep eight defensemen), although one of the forwards could stick around a little longer while Brian Boyle gets back to full health.
Either way, Ray Shero and co. have some tough decisions to make.
