This is not good.
The New Jersey Devils lost to the New York Islanders by the score of 4-2 and the Isles get their first home victory in their new arena. We knew this would be an important week with four games, which three were winnable. The results are unacceptable.
The Devils could only gain 3 total points out of 8 on the table this past week. With the exception of the game against the Philadelphia Flyers, the Devils did not perform well and the Devils have been in a free fall since announcing the franchise would have alternate third jerseys back in mid November. Since then, the team has a record of 2-6-2 with a measly six points in the past 10 games.
Before the season began, Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald stated that the goal is to play meaningful games late in the season and be in the playoff hunt. As it stands now, the Devils are five points out of a wild card spot with teams to climb over after 26 games played. The good news is there is still plenty of time left to catch up. However, this free fall is spiraling out of control with only victories against the Flyers as of late.
You cannot be patient here. They need to make changes now. We have read this story before in the past few years. Before you know it, Devils fans will be looking forward to another lottery pick in the NHL Draft.
Burning Question
Devils Arm Chair GM: If you were Tom Fitzgerald, what immediate changes would you make to turn the team around?
