McIlrath on waivers Per Pro Hockey Rumors and Elliotte Friedman.
Without much context available yet, it would appear Detroit’s defensive core is getting healthier. Even if that is the case, this move seems questionable. Ericsson was called up when the injuries started mounting. Sending Big E back to Grand Rapids would seem the more prudent move with virtually no risk of losing him on the waiver wire. Beyond that, McIlrath has been a bit of a steadying presence short handed, and certainly helps to clear the crease more effectively than most of Detroit’s defensive players.
More likely than not, McIlrath will clear waivers again and be assigned to Grand Rapids. It still seems an unnecessary move given the remaining players. I would love to hear your thoughts on this move. Detroit’s defense is clearly Achilles-esque. This just seems to be a bit out of left field.
