This could be the year the Sedins move on...as rentals......
The twins are in the final year of their contracts and should this season not look promising for Vancouver many are already saying the Sedins could approach Vancouver and ask to be moved as rentals to bring some more assets to the Canucks and then this coming summer the Sedins would become UFA's and would return to Vancouver...a better Vancouver because of the players/picks/prospects that would head to the Canucks in the deal...
This has happened before...remember Keith Tkachuk?
However, the Canucks signing of Vanek this past week looks more like a team trying to win now...sort of. I like the Vanek signing because he is a highly skilled player who plays his best with other skilled players. Vanek could be amazing if played with the Sedins and that could put the Canucks potentially in the race in the West...
And I know many Canucks fans who would rather the team commit to the rebuild...and unfortunately many admit that moving the Sedins out is a vital part of that...
But who could afford to acquire both players?
Of course, it is always possible the brothers could be moved to separate teams. However, within the hockey world I am majorly hearing the belief is they want to remain together in Vancouver...unless leaving "together" could benefit the future of the team.
There are probably only two teams with cap space who will be in the playoff hunt and be capable of landing the complete Sedin set...and they are two rivals of monumental proportion: Montreal and Toronto....Wouldn't it be something if one ended up in each city and they played in the playoffs?
The Leafs will be a force this year and short-time rents of the Sedins could add needed scoring punch and experience in a playoff run...The Habs will need even more offense than Toronto, and the Habs have Carey Price.
We know the Canucks will want to hold off as long as possible to make this decision, but there may be considerable pressure from Toronto or Montreal should they be on the bubble of the playoff picture...
