Follow @james_tanner123 The Capitals have one more day off - even though the NHL resumes tonight (thank God, it's so boring on one of the ten days a year where there isn't fantasy baseball or hockey).
Tomorrow they'll play the Flyers and attempt to win what I believe is, but am too lazy to look up , their third straight division title.
Of course, the Capitals actually were the best team in hockey last year, and this year they are a paper tiger, so it's going to be interesting to see what happens over the last 30 games. If Holtby and Ovechkin can keep up their MVP seasons, then maybe the Capitals can keep it going.
Some people seem to have trouble following this logic, but it's quite obvious if you think about it. The Capitals won the President's trophy last year, and in addition to having the best roster in the NHL, they were the NHL's best defensive team.
This year, while the wins are coming, they have a terrible roster and are one of the worst teams in the NHL for allowing shots against and scoring chances against. Due to random luck, Braden Holtby and Alex Ovechkin, the Capitals are staying afloat, but history tells us that when this happens, it's not for long.
I hope the Capitals win the Cup, but the objective information that we have says they are a terrible team.
Obviously he's going to try and buy - selling would be stupid, you might as well go for it - but how much capital do you invest in this year when the odds of a first round exit are incredibly high. Especially if things continue to be whacky - there are six teams currently in the Metro with between 55-57 points, and the best team, Carolina, has 52.
The Capitals - who are a three game losing streak from being out of the Playoffs altogether, could easily open the Playoffs against the Penguins, Blue Jackets or Hurricanes, all three of which are much better, much deeper teams. As long as the Caps avoid the Blue Jackets, however, they can at least count on an edge in goal.
The All Star game was fun - Ovechkin won the hardest shot contest and then played on a line with Crosby in the game. It was awesome seeing them together.
Anyways, with no game for a week, that's all I got.
