The Vancouver Canucks kicked off their 2023-24 season with a bang. They defeated the Edmonton Oilers, a team many view as Stanley Cup contenders, by an 8-1 final score.
Just about everything went right for the Canucks in this one. Not only did their top stars show up, but they also received contributions from the bottom portion of their lineup. Players like Dakota Joshua, Nils Hoglander, Sam Lafferty, Phillip Di Giuseppe, and Noah Juulsen all got on the scoresheet. However, their big-name players ended up stealing the show.
Brock Boeser, the subject of offseason trade rumors, went off in this contest. The 2015 first-round pick put together a four-goal performance. He also had a shoot-first mentality in this one, as he had a team-leading eight shots. If he continues to let it fly moving forward, this should finally be the year he hits the 30-goal mark. The potential is there.
J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson also made a major impact in the contest. They each ended the game with a goal and four points. These two are expected to be the club's top offensive producers, so it was great to see them start of the year in such a strong fashion.
The Canucks also got production from their defence. Captain Quinn Hughes had a three-assist night, while Filip Hronek potted two assists.
Although offence was the story of this game, one should not ignore the Canucks' goaltending. Thatcher Demko was excellent, as he saved 21 out of 22 shots while dealing with flu symptoms. Yet, the starting netminder left the contest early after vomiting in his mask. From there, Casey DeSmith made his Canucks regular-season debut, saving all five shots he faced.
Alas, this was a marvelous game for the Canucks. However, as big of a win as this was, it is only one, and the Canucks have 81 more games to play. For their next contest on Oct. 14, they will be going up against the Oilers, and they will be looking for redemption. We will need to wait and see if the Canucks can steal another two points against them from here.
