Canadiens Cull Panthers in MTL, News and Notes

The dam finally broke and the Canadiens finally capitalized on some PP’s with great play, and a couple lucky bounces. I apologize for the delay and I’m aware there is a lot of news today regarding the Habs. I’ve been really sick, along with my wife, and its been a struggle for the last day and a half

The Habs gave the first goal early in the second period to Panther Keith Yandle, but finally it was the Canadiens who scored multiple goals late as Galchenyuk chipped a greasy one over Florida net minder James Reimer (they still calling him Optimus in FLO?) after some great passing and effort by Drouin and Gallagher. Time of the goal was 16:44. The Panther’s Matheson took a penalty almost immediately after the goal and Shea Weber unleashed a absolute rocket by Reimer at 18:02 and Brendan Gallagher followed that up with a fantastic individual effort for his 3rd goal of the season 17 seconds laters.

The Habs didn’t look back and the team looked confident, a look they haven’t had all season so far. Weber ripped another laser into the net at 9:11 of the 3rd for his 3rd of the year and Max Pacioretty cleaned up a mess in front of the net just under 2 minutes later for his 2nd of the year.

Carey Price made some HUGE saves early in this one and the team responded in kind as the Habs continued their trend of outshooting their opponents by a final total of 37 to 27.

The addition of Scherbak and McCarron was fantastic. Scherbak and Galchenyuk created a few great shifts together and McCarron played well along the walls and laid some big hits. If Big Mac can get a bit more out of his strides, speed wise, he will stay in the NHL. As for Scherbak, he better not be going anywhere. We may have seen the last of Ales Hemsky.

What. A. Relief.

The Canadiens continue the campaign tomorrow night against a top notch LA Kings team, but this time the battle is set in the confines of the Bell Centre. I’ll update this space tomorrow if theres any major line up changes.

BERGEVIN ANSWERS TO RELENTLESS MEDIA

Marc Bergevin caved to the Montreal media and set aside time today to answer some fairly useless questions about the Canadiens. Most of the answers were what you would expect and really have no bearing on anything other than giving quotes and sound bites for media to write about.

This picture for TSN’s tweet pretty much summed up what I thought the press conference brought. Canned answers.

Bergevin mentioned the obvious, like dealing just to deal would be a mistake and no one is looking to help anyways so you’re dealing from a position of weakness. He addressed the team prior to leaving California but wouldn’t say what was said, of course. Marc mentioned the answer to the teams problems will be found in the dressing room and on the ice. Fairly obvious stuff right?

The biggest story was brought about by some comments former Canadien, and destroyer of the Habs, Mario Tremblay. Tremblay, no angel himself, has mentioned that two times during this summer Alex Galchenyuk checked into the NHL assisted substance/drug abuse program. Tremblay should have respected the players privacy, especially considering that IF TRUE this is good for Galchenyuk to seek help. No one should be demonized for making a mistake if they actively seek to rectify it. THAT SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH SOME MONTREAL MEDIA LATELY, but I won’t give them the extra publicity for their shamefullness in how some members of the Athletic have conducted themselves, which is piss poorly and without integrity.

Bergevin advised that any substance programs initiated by a player are confidential between the player and the league, and he isn’t privy to such information. So, either Tremblay is a liar looking for attention, or he has some confidential info that he unleashed to world. Either way, he’s colossal, ignorant ass who deserves to be stripped of his platform. Classless.

If Galchenyuk is seeking help, then we should be supporting him, not dragging him through the mud. Time for some to grow up a bit.

Furthermore, Bergevin said that the Canadiens will not be giving up on Galchenyuk and know he has the skill to be dominant, even mentioning his torrid pace before his injury last season. But he also said that the work needs to be put in to get the desired results and the only one who can control that is Alex, which is fair.

Lastly, Marc Bergevin advised that as long as Victor Mete keeps playing at the level he currently is, he will remain with the Canadiens Hockey Club. Good news, to say the least, but also fairly expected.

OVERTIME

A couple final notes.

First, a interesting tweet from HockeyBuzz’s own Todd Cordell that states that Lehkonen is tied for 11th in the NHL with Monohan and Nylander for 5v5 chances with 24. Hopefully, the puck luck dam is about to burst on Lehkonen’s season soon and when it does we should get to see a heck of a hockey player unleashed.

Second, some information from HockeyBuzz alumni Eric Engels about the recently demoted Vegas Knight, Vladim Shipchyov.

Habs aren’t interested.

Last year, Connor McDavid’s Rookie Auto Patch card numbered to 99 sold routinely in the secondary market for prices above $20,000-$25,000 and with this years sporting the likes of Matthews, Laine, Marner its expected to have similar values, especially the Matthew’s rookie card. Granted the price is steep, but the reward could be great.
