The Calgary Flames have signed winger Andrew Mangiapane to a one-year, two-way extension worth $715,000.
Mangiapane, 23, enjoyed a solid debut season with the club. He scored eight times and recorded 13 points in 44 games. That’s a 24 point pace over 82 games, which is pretty good for a rookie averaging a hair over 10 minutes per game.
The counting totals don’t pop but his efficiency numbers do. He averaged 1.10 goals per 60 at 5v5, which led the team. His total output – 1.79 points/60 – was that of a top-6 forward. I realize he was playing soft competition but Garnet Hathaway was his most common linemate. He made the most of the opportunities he was given despite less than ideal playing circumstances.
Mangiapane’s on-ice numbers were also very encouraging. At 5v5, the Flames controlled 54.85% of the shot attempts and 59.91% of the expected goals while out-scoring opponents 22-11. Not bad!
Mangiapane no doubt wanted to be paid based off his strong 5v5 profile. Given the small sample size, and lack of *real* production, the Flames weren’t willing to cave.
If he’s able to enjoy success while carving out a bigger role this season, Mangiapane will no doubt be in line for a nice raise next summer.
