Blues shoot down the Stars, head to Detroit for an afternoon tilt

Follow me on twitter On Thursday, the Blues shutout former coach Ken Hitchcock’s Dallas Stars 3-0. The shutout by Jake Allen tied him with Glen Hall for the 3rd most shutouts in Blues history at 16. I knew that Brian Elliott led the Blues but was surprised to learn he has 50% more (24) in fewer games.

In the game, the Blues got power play goals from Brayden Schenn and Colton Parayko and an empty net goal from Vladimir Tarasenko. Colton Parayko and Schenn led the team with 4 shots each. Vladimir Sobotka was the only player with two points, two assists in the game.

In posting the shutout, Jake Allen made a handful of strong saves and got saved by the 2nd period buzzer, getting beat just after the period ended. His lower leg pad stop in the 1st period was quite good as were a couple of other stops later in the game.

With a lower body injury to Carter Hutton, former Blues employee and St. Louis University club goalie Tyler Stewart served as the emergency backup goalie until Ville Husso was able to arrive. Read more about it here:

Coach Mike Yeo had some fun in the press conference after the game. When asked about Tyler Stewart, he responded “he was sharp [with a big smile]…. He was pressed further when asked if he was holding his breath [regarding an Allen injury] and responded “No, that was not the case. We were really confident in him[Tyler]… and then started laughing. He added “sorry I don’t have more for you guys on this…. He was pressed even further asking if Tyler was an NHL goalie to which he responded “I don’t know. I haven’t seen the scouting report and I haven’t seen him play yet. I didn’t watch warmups so I can’t really tell you but again pretty cool, pretty cool for him….

The Blues will face Detroit in a noon CST game today. The Red Wings are 3-4-3 in their last 10 games and 5-5-4 at in their new arena this season. This is the 2nd game of the Red Wings 5 game home stand. The Red Wings have the 10th best power play and the 11th best penalty kill. They rank 23rd in both goals for and goals against per game.

The Red Winds are led by Anthony Mantha and Dylan Larkin. Mantha has 12 goals and 22 points while Larkin has 4 goals and 23 points. On defense, Mike Green leads the way with 18 points. Green has had good success against the Blues with 8 points in 10 games. The most successful Red Wing against the Blues is Henrik Zetterberg who has 68 points in 65 games.

Jimmy Howard is expected to get the start in net. Howard is 13-7-2 against the Blues with a 91.5% save percentage.

Schenn has 12 points in 14 games against the Red Wings while Tarasenko has 7 points in 11 games. Interestingly, Jaden Schwartz has struggled against the Red Wings with only 1 point in 11 games. Allen is 1-0-3 against the Red Wings with a 90.2% save percentage. I expect the lines to look like this though there is a chance Blais makes his way back into the lineup:
