Better effort for two periods not enough, Wings fall 5-1 to Bruins (Red Wings)

Game Summary: I tend to look at games in 2 different ways. Either we’re playing a group that has individuals who can burn you or you’re playing a team. The difference, for me, is what each line looks like as the game progresses. You know when a McDavid or Matthews hits the ice. The Bruins, while they have players who obviously stick out, have a ridiculous amount of consistency from line to line. Detroit just looks lost.

To be fair, the defense for Detroit was better for the first two periods. You can just watch the team crumble as the score keeps going the wrong way.

Even when the shots were equal in the 2nd, Boston’s passes and looks were so much smoother. Yes, Detroit has made big changes. The team clearly doesn’t feel comfortable with the new system yet. But even then, players are making such poor decisions on passing vs. shooting. Turnovers seem plentiful. Yes, multiple shots went off the post. Regardless, the team can’t continue this route. The lone goal of the night was a quick turn and shoot by Erne after the puck bounced off of an errant stick. There were far too many “pass instead of shoot… and too much overthinking. The cross seam pass on the power play is cringeworthy and often leads to an interception. The Wings seem to have better possession luck when they pass on the perimeter and look for a one timer near the dots (my opinion)

A healthy Vrana and a healthy Bertuzzi could make a difference. The injury for Copp seems to either have slowed him down or it just hasn’t healed. Our Sophomores are slumping a bit. Zadina, offensively, just doesn’t look comfortable shooting. He’s swearing at himself on the bench and that’s never a good sign.

The Bruins were on Larkin like a blanket and by the end of the game he’d had more than enough. It’s very early in the season, but the optimism and energy look completely sapped out of this group. At some point you have to have confidence, and that has to be earned. Yzerman has a ton of patience, but the past two games more than warrant some sort of shake up. It’s just been a tough watch.

So what do we do? You all know I’m a big Chycrun fan, but he just got hurt again while rehabbing another injury. We have enough players heading to IR. I’ve said before that if a team plays hard and ends up on the losing end, I’m fine with that. When pro athletes look lost during the game, that’s another story. There are individuals trying to make a difference but this doesn’t feel like a “team… right now.

First Period Detroit goals: No first period Detroit goals

Second Period Detroit goals:

Erne finally got Detroit on the board doing what most of us were probably yelling at the TV. A pass bounced off a dropped stick, he turned and ripped it. No cross seam pass, no shake and bake. Just turn and shoot. Much needed boost with 1:11 left in the second.

Third Period Detroit goals: No Third Period goals
