Auston Powers Past Broten (leafs)

Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews was at it again on Monday night. The 2016 first overall pick potted his 39th goal of the season and in so doing set the record for most goals by an American-born rookie player.

Matthews made history at 5:01 of the first period to put move Toronto ahead of Buffalo 2-0.

Robin Lehner was pulled after allowing three Toronto goals on three shots on goal in a 43 second span. Lehner was replaced nub anders Nilsson.

Matthews scored his 39th goal in his 78th career game to move past Neal Broten, who scored 38 goals in 73 games for the Minnesota North Stars in 1981-82.

The goal also was Matthews' 67th point of the season, and broke the Leafs' franchise rookie record set by Peter Ihnacak in 1982-83.
