A “Buzz… About These Devils (Devils)

Last night in D.C., the New Jersey Devils came back and defeated the Washington Capitals 5-4. The Devils youth movement is in full swing as Yegor Sharangovich, Jack Hughes, Dawson Mercer, Alexander Holtz, and Nico Hischier scored one goal a piece. All are under the age of 24. Although it is one preseason game, there is a buzz about these Devils.

How about that line combination of Sharangovich, Hughes, and Holtz? Their transition game is lethal as they all have the speed, skill, and hockey sense to move the puck up the ice on a moment notice which led to the first goal of the game. By stretching the ice, they put the Capitals blueline on notice most of the night. With Hughes’ vision, Sharangovich’s all around ability, and Holtz’ ability to put pucks into the net from either circle, this line could be dangerous for years to come and it was gratifying seeing a glimpse of the future.

The Devils still need to work on their defense and special teams, especially the penalty kill. I was not impressed with Jonathan Bernier’s first preseason outing as a Devil but not concerned. Nico Daws was perfect making all 10 saves and even shutting the Capitals out in the practice shootout after the game.

Devils are back in action this Friday night at Prudential Center against the newly beefed up New York Rangers. I’ll be at Taj Lounge 973, across the street from The Rock, for a live pregame podcast. Come stop by and join in on the fun!
