Sean Avery is what the Stars need UPDATE: Miettinen gone

Updates at bottom

The Dallas Stars came into free agency looking to find a top 6 winger to help bolster the attack. When matched up with the top club in hockey in the Western Conference Finals the Stars were clearly the inferior team, and it was blatantly obvious to any casual observer. The main issue that arose against Detroit was what happens when a team finds a way to shut the Ribeiro line

Sean Avery is the newest Dallas Star.

Sean Avery, a man that defined his own set of "Sean Avery rules" is getting 16 million dollars from the Dallas Stars. No one seems to have clearly defined his role as of yet, but what we do know is that he's the Stars newest left winger.

A couple things jump to mind after hearing that Avery is a Star now:

1. At his salary isn't he pretty much guaranteed a spot in the top 2 lines?

Miettinen: NHL prize free agent? UPDATE: Hagman gone

Any updates will be at the bottom

NHL Free Agency can turn any random 3rd or 4th liner into the NHL's next great potential 1st line anchor alpha male. All the talk, and until he signs it's just talk, points to Antti Miettinen as a big time free agent target this July 1. My question: why?

With all of the interest one would immidiately think that Antti Miettinen was a solid offensive p

The "Bataan Death March" is over

So was Brett Hull bored at the NHL Draft? He told NHL.com that:

"Boring isn't the right word," Hull, the Dallas Stars co-GM, told NHL.com. "I think of the Bataan Death March."

NHL.com

With that, let's take a look at what the Stars did in the draft. It wasn't particularly pretty, but how much can you expect from a team with 5 picks?

Erik Cole eh?

The Versus staff kept mentioning how Carolina is willing to deal a top 6 forward to get a defender to help them now. So I began thinking: Why haven't Dallas and Carolina been linked?

In the hockeybuzz chat I asked Eklund if he'd heard anything. According to Ek, Dallas has had discussions about Erik Cole which could possibly happen tonight.

Anyone else like the idea of adding Erik Cole

Will we go all day Friday without seeing the Stars logo?

June 20th, 2008

The 2008 NHL Entry Draft begins tonight in Ottawa with the first round that will be televised from coast to coast on Versus. The Stars have no first round pick this year thanks to the Mattias Norstrom trade, but it's entirely possible that the team could make an impact on the proceedings in Ottawa.

Without a first rounder the Stars would have a difficult time moving up in

Mattias Norstrom retires to be a carpenter? UPDATE2: Sertich out

Mattias Norstrom is set to retire apparently due to some undisclosed family matters.

The Stars picks up Mattias Norstrom from the Los Angeles Kings at last years trade deadline along with Konstantin Pushkarev for this years 1st rounder, Jaroslav Modry, and Johan Fransson.

Norstrom was a key contributor to the 2007/2008 Western Conference Finals run after a so so regular season. His reti

2008/09: It's time to look forward

June 4th, 2007

2007/2008 was the most exciting season of Stars hockey since 2000, but like all good things this must come to an end. The season is still officially going on tonight in Pittsburgh yet there is little doubt that the Stars brass is hard at work configuring next season’s roster. The 2008/2009 roster currently has numerous holes, but unlike most seasons the Stars potentially have

I hope you guys are watching this

Pittsburgh is just hanging on to this game.

We saw this Red Wings team in the Dallas series. They just keep charging. Ive found myself not questioning that Detroit is going to win this game. Even when they were down 2-0 I didn't question it.

Detroit is just clearly a superior team at this point, but what an excellent game. I hope Stars fans are hanging in with this.

Game 4, or MMA?

As I settled in last night after attending my first Rangers game of the year I figured I would flip the TV on to check out how Game 4 of the Finals went. The highlights of the game went pretty much how I expected: Pittsburgh makes a first push then Detroit finds a way to get the win. The coverage flipped over to Barry Melrose and a beautifully attired Don Cherry discussing the game where Don Cherr
