If I recall from looking into him, he shows strongly on the PK and team-relative numbers. Obviously only as a bottom pairing guy, but an effective bottom pairing can do wonders for a team. |

So we’re Kindl, Sproul, Smith, Almqvist, Marchenko, Meech, Ledba, etc. |

Not sure I understand the buyout. Stashing him in the minors only cost ~50k more toward the cap this year and you don't have any lingering effects next year. Unless Illitch is really tight for cash all of a sudden or the Wings think he will get claimed. |

It was more about freeing up the logjam between GR and the 3-7 spots in DET. Same with the Russo trade. Not a loss, XO kinda blew. |

Guys like Ouellet are a dime a dozen. Might as well try to give that roster spot to somebody else. |

He's 24 so that is still a possibility he gets claimed? I haven't seen the wings play enough to know much about him? Would he be an upgrade over someone like Polak? |

Neither XO or Russo can skate well enough to be consistently effective in the NHL. |

Yep. Hopefully a couple can make DET but it gives Sulak and Cholowski major roles in GR worst case. |

Over Polak. Yes. But that is a pretty low bar. |

Good moves from KH.
I was moderately surprised (in a good way!) at the buyout for XO rather than simply burying him in the minors. It actually makes a lot of sense. Saves money IRL and against the cap (albeit over 2 years instead of one), but more importantly it clears a roster spot wherever he would have ended up (Detroit or GR).
Presumably they attempted to trade him and couldn't find any takers; it's possible they might have had more luck on that front if they waited until camp, but probably safer/smarter to use the buyout window instead while it's open. The chance at a 7th rounder (or even a waiver claim) later isn't worth the risk of possibly (probably) getting stuck with him for another full year.
Russo I think still has an outside shot to play a couple of years as a bottom pair NHL defender (or at the very least, he can be a good anchor vet for somebody's AHL team), but again, players like that are not exactly rare or hard to acquire and the Wings need to make space in GR for players who have more upside.
Barring additional moves the Griffins still have Lashoff and McIlrath as placeholder vets, plus they'll get one or two of Hronek / Hicketts / Sulak depending on who doesn't make the Wings out of camp, plus they need to be able to get meaningful ice time to Cholowski and Saarijarvi. Plus it looks like they might still re-sign Renouf, who did get a qualifying offer.
So yeah, clearing out some borderline NHL/AHL D-men is definitely a good move for the health of the system. |

This. Hronek up, Hicketts too possibly. Kronwall is done after this season most likely. This is a good thing. |

Meh. He has been relatively average since leaving. Probably another guy that can't skate at the top pro levels. |

Kronwall done after this season and an Ericsson buyout makes more sense next off-season.

I've been going to Griffins games since their inaugural season and Almqvist would probably make my all-time favorite starting five. Absolutely loved watching that guy play. Not sure he ever would have had NHL-level chops (probably not) but bummed he never got the chance to find out either way. |
