Sens hands were tied in the situation but its an embarrassment that they refused to trade within the division and came out with 0 building block assets. Who cares, your team is rebuilding and a going to be bad and wont be making the playoffs. Hoffman in the division doesnt impact you.

Sharks master classed this situation, and are set up nicely for UFA.

Panthers, rolled the dice and got a good player at a discount even though hes associated with a scum bag situation.

However much is left to be desired about Hoffman the person. Considering how quickly the Sens traded him speaks volumes on how they view the player.

They knew about this at the deadline and decided to wait. I don't agree with what you said because it seems to me they were trying to hold on to him to see if this could be worked out in-house before they had to make this deal.

exactly, from all the reported rumours this was long lingering situation as far back as November and Sens might have not taken it as seriously as they should have. As soon as it went public then they were forced to make the move now.

If it turns out the Hoffmans are innocent, this deal looks wonderful for Florida, and even worse for Ottawa (hard to believe that's even possible).

I don't disagree with anything you said, except you aren't giving Hoffman enough scumbag credit. There's a reason he's 28 and has only played 4 full seasons in the NHL. He has always had attitude issues and will continue to have them. He is not a good "team" guy. Great shooter...but that's it.

The other thing I would point out, that a lot of people seem to be overlooking, is that I'm not entirely convinced the Sens think they are rebuilding. IF they manage to re-sign Karlsson (which is a coin toss) then they are clearly approaching this as a retool. I think Dorion and Melnyk have it in their head that last season was an anomaly and moving Hoffman was addition by subtraction.

The rebuilding comments are all based on your owner basically saying rebuild by coming out and saying at the end of last year that the plan is for them to win the cup in the next 3-5 years.

If you arent rebuilding then why would you be waiting and planning to win the cup into the future. then you ahve dreger calling it a rebuild

cant fault guys for saying Sens are rebuilding after all that

Unless it is already known that Hoffman has severed ties w/ his girlfriend/fiance' , I don't know why any team would even think about wanting him on their team!!! Their are many other players out there who can put up his numbers w/out the baggage. I'm sure his mind will be on things other than hockey this offseason! I've also heard that in addition to his girl being bat shiiit crazy, that he's a douche as well, and not a team guy.

Dumb move by Florida!

Good for San Jose and Ottawa!

They didn't know about it at the deadline. By all accounts, it wasn't really a public thing or a major issue until after the attacks after the death of their child which didn't happen until the end of March. The trade deadline was the end of February.

I don't fault anybody for saying the Sens are rebuilding. I'm just saying that Dorion and Melnyk don't seem to actually think they are in a rebuild or need to "rebuild". I think the comment about winning the cup in the next 3 to 5 years actually speaks to that. I think the Sens management are approaching this as a "retool"...not a "rebuild". Rebuild would be stripping the organization down and essentially starting from scratch, where as management seems to be under the impression that a couple of changes is all it will take to alter the current fortunes of the club.

Not saying I agree with that approach...just saying I think that's the actual mindset of management.

I believe that Dorion's mindset is that he thinks White, Brown or possibly another rookie will replace Hoffman and add to the top6. That thereby makes Boedker's acquisition a replacement for Smith (not Hoffman) who is almost guaranteed to be moved at the draft.

Again, not saying I agree with that logic...but I believe that is likely the way Sens management is looking at this.

I honestly do not understand the rationale of Senator fans.
How can you watch this circus and want to defend it?
You are only defending Melnyk's incompetence when you defend anything the Senators do nowadays.

The GM of San Jose unloaded $4M cap in Boedker (a player worth less than a 7th round pick), attained several draft picks (2nd, 4th, and two 5ths) all because Melnyk and Co. cannot make a competent decision.

When this transpired I did not try to come up with ways to defend this.
Everything that this ownership group does makes me want to burn my current Senator merchandise instead of collecting more merch and renewing as a season ticket holder.

Stop backing awful decisions.

I dont know Hoffman personally so i cant really comment on his personality but in terms of this incident,it shouldnt affect any other teams or the players on the team. As a player myself, i dont really give a poop about other peoples issues off the ice. One of my teammates was arrested for assaulting a cab driver. I dont actually care. Id still play on his team, i have played against him since the arrest but as long as he doesn't frank with me i dont care if i play with or against him.

At the end of the day you guys did very well! However, I think keeping Hoffman would have been even more successful, but either scenario was an improvement. Plus I don't know what potential UFA signings your club has hiding up their sleeves.

I would tend to think you would have an issue with a teammates Fiance wishing death to your wife and wishing your career would be ended by a cheap shot. Not quite in the same category as roughing up a cab driver. Did you really play with Patrick Kane?

Agree. Where they rebuilding when they made Duchene trade? Hoffman had to be moved, and Sens where not dealing from a position of strength...they got Boedker who is same age and owed less money. I wouldn’t say they’re rebuilding unless they trade both Duchene and EK. Let’s waot and see

There's a huge difference between events that affect the dressing room and those that don't. If you get liquored up and rough up a cab driver, it's not going to affect the dressing room. If anything, he'd just become the butt of some jokes for a while.
