Bob Duff: Bylsma headed to Hockeytown? The Detroit Red Wings have approached former Penguins and Sabres coach Dan Bylsma regarding their vacant assistant coaching position.

“I don’t know Dan as well,” Bylsma said. “I know him a bit through USA Hockey and stuff. He’s always been very good, a nice gentleman to me. We have somewhat of a friendship but not like some of the guys I know much better.”

I'm still perplexed why the heck the Wings didn't promote Todd Nelson after they let assistant coach Torchetti go. Holland is a MORON. Lost a good coaching prospect in Nelson. Nelson was excellent at getting the most out of his players. Jim Nill was smart to poach him from the Wings... Another example of Holland's inept management of this team.

So when is Duff's contract up? Can we trade him for a 700th round pick?

"We got to get back to our game...."

"I need a 3rd and 4th line full of Dan Bylsma type grinders, that don't score, don't hit and take stupid penalties. I'll also stay stubbornly loyal to them making sure they get an equal share of ice time"

Dan is just the guy you need to turn things around. Out of his last 6 years under contract, he'll have been paid/will be paid 4 years NOT TO COACH.

Nelson was the one that wanted out and said he wanted a change of scenery.
Holland normally prefers to promote from within primarily before looking for external assistants.

So, you really can't blame him for this when it was the coach himself making a life decision for himself.

Bylsma's tenure in Buffalo raised some eyebrows, Eichel wasn't a big fan and rumor has it Dan doesn't like to give young guys a lot of ice time. I think the glow from his only cup is wearing off...

Not officially confirmed that I know of, but I read somewhere that Nelson was offered the assistant position in Detroit and turned it down.

If true, it certainly stings to have a guy turn down a promotion within your organization and then accept the same position elsewhere.

I have been impressed with Nelson based on what I've seen in GR and based on the comments he's made about his approach. Frankly I would have been much happier if Nelson had taken Blash's job instead of Torchetti's.

How both Holland & Blashill still have jobs is mind blowing. Just goes to show how truly clueless Chris Ilitch has to be.

Well so much for Holland saying the defense needed an overhaul...apparently Holland has made two offers to Mike Green on a new contract. So unless he moves people we might end up with a pretty similar defense next season. Good for a tank job but horrible to watch. Since the contracts are for 1 and 2 years, maybe Green will opt to go somewhere else.

My guess is he won't move anyone and instead go with everyone to training camp saying things will work themselves out there with very little chance of any prospects cracking the lineup on defense. If one or two do make it, it will be Ouellet and/or Jensen being waived to make room and lost for nothing.

Interesting... I hadn't heard of these rumors. If true, it shows you that Nelson probably saw some things he didn't like in the organization. Holland usually does promote from within which made the whole situation weird when Neslon left while there was an opening. I agree... would rather have Nelson replace Blashill.

This absolutely makes me want to vomit... but not surprised. A zebra (like Holland) doesn't change his stripes. Freakin' moron. I'll be shocked if Green gets any offers from other teams after his back/spinal injury and age. We can only hope... we gotta get our defensive prospects on the ice in Detroit and see what they can do.

I disagree; I think Green could still get a lot of attention from other teams.

- He's old but not elderly (32)

- He can still play (was one of only 35 NHL defenseman to average half a point per game or better last season)

- The 2018 class of UFA defenders is hot garbage. John Carlson is far and away the best available, but Green is still easily No. 2 without any real competition. Take those two guys off the board and teams will be fighting over the likes of John Moore, Calvin De Haan, Thomas Hickey, Luca Sbisa, Ian Cole, and Dan Hamhuis for help.

Obviously his health is a risk, but since he only costs you money I think there are going to be teams willing to take it, especially on a short-term deal.
