Imagine had Nino gotten trade value or remained with isles with Spurgeon.

Sigh.

Nino for Clutter and 2nd (ended up McAdam) was after the isles getting drubbed by Pitt in the playoffs of a shortened season. Great to get an attribute they were missing at time.., but the failure is complete in the 2nd round pick not becoming something of a strong goalie candidate. Clutter was terrible last season (and the analytics supports this... which is for an upcoming blog). So let’s hope he bounces back.

That might have been the best thing for him in the long run as he has that hunger to be the best

He had the numbers in the dub. He was ready. Regardless it’s over. New regime.

I gotta be honest.....the Nino thing while bad, is not the real issue or problem here. The problem here is that Garth built down the middle, and then kept building down the middle. The fact that a former NHL goaltender did not bring in a goalie (the MOST important position to any team), in 12 years is more than shocking. To field a defensive core with 4 fringe dmen, is just downright irresponsible.

agreed, it doesnt matter now. I just love to point out that one year, the kid couldnt make the team under the all knowing Jack Capuano, and then the next year, on a team who couldnt make the playoffs he takes top rookie spot in the entire league.

Been reading a lot of "why not?" speculation about Lehner. I wouldn't touch him with a 10-foot pole

Tom Gulitti reporting Caps GM will explore trades for Grubauer. Wants to keep Holtby and him but understand he wants to be a #1 goalie

Grubauer ... though not a HUGE sample size, had a high danger save % near upper part of NHL this past year with quite a bit of work (83% or so). Last year was near or at 81%. Isles tempo style (I still think they go with most of it) really needs the goaltender to be at 80% or so on High Danger save%.

(going by memory here)
Greiss was like low 70s. Near 70 or 71%, like 3rd worst in NHL. It was that bad. Previous years he was 80 or so (higher in that year vs FL in rd 1) Halakl was 78 or so. Anything under 80 isn’t helpful, especially if you are running a style that depends on it. NOW add that the isles rookie coach and his guys changed that defensive system to not block shots. It became a nightmare. Then they were slow to change it back.

yea 60 games could be considered slow, maybe after giving up 5 goals and 50 shots back to back early in the year he should have done something with his system

Embarrassingly bad.....not even so much the system, but the inability to fix the problem. 40-50 shots was the norm for this team......thats unheard of

I’m thinking that the new coach will play a more defense first system and keep the opponents shots and odd man rushes to a minimum. If they do this they have the offensive talent to score and would make much more sense than the run and gun of previous coaches.
Great example is Trotz taking over in DC.

Just got a text from a guy close to LeGreca, says Don heard Brodeur talking to Lou about a comeback.

Huge if true. There’s the tender they need.

Yes, I agree. I have a feeling many things are on the trade block..
Off the top of my head, I would think Sorokin, Ho-Sang, Dal Colle, Aho, any one of the picks, Nelson, Pelech and Mayfield are probably to be had.
If they want good D, they have to package. I would think the right goalie could be a pick and a lesser guy like Mayfield

- brodydog29

When did folks start giving up on Pelech? He’s not deHaan... Not untouchable either but one of the few dmen this team has developed all the way to the show.
