Peter Tessier: It's not the cap/contracts it's the decisions for Chevy- tough ones! Chevy has decisions to make around his roster for the now and into the future. Will he deal with tough realities or let the roster suffer a bit due to some less than ideal decisions?

Nice write up, I really like the idea of trying to pull Trouba out of there. Maybe Marner and Toronto's 1st for copp and trouba?

"In Chevy I trust"

I have not put the 23 man roster together using that tool - - - however:

- assuming we sign Troubs long term - would it be worth it to package Myers up with say a Dano/Petan and send them to Carolina for the 2nd overall pick ? ... would Carolina bite ?
- for that matter, same deal with the Habs for the 3rd overall ?

Would be nice to land a Svechnikov/Tkachuk/Zadina/Kotkaniemi into the coffers and shed some cap whilst doing so

Gonna take way more than that to get the second overall pick. Myers, Petan a second and maybe more.

If Trouba is signed, Myers must go.
1. We need the cap space.
2. Trouba needs more ice time, to justify his salary.

Little is being overpaid, but is still a useful player. If Schiefele goes down, we need Little. At least in the short-term.

I like Perreault, but I like Stastny more.

Habs need a center not Myers.

I’ll dive into the entire article later when I have more time but I am growing very tired of the little contract talk.

What does little get right now as a UFA on the open market? Do ou honestly think he gets less than 5.3? I don’t!!!! Centers are over paid in the NHL! That is reality. We are paying Little market value and if we didn’t have him we would be oberpaying someone else.

Little's contract can't be judged on an off year for him - not fair to him or Chevy. 2-way centres are valued throughout the league and Little brings good value to the Jets. We can start looking at the value Jets are getting in a couple years (after the contract actually kicks in)

Obviously we are happy with Stasny's production with Laine and Ehlers through the end of season, and with Stasny's production on the PP. The sample size was small, other players will have taken notes on what was making him successful (Roslovic, Little, Perreault) and the team will find their way just fine without him. I am equally comfortable betting on Little's production as I am Stasny's and Little is committed to Wpg and under contract.

Great write-up Peter

I am bluntly thinking: Trade Little if possible, and spend that on keeping Statsny who was a clear upgrade.

Trade Meyers only if - you are able to get reasonable long term extensions with Trouba and Morrissey. If they just take bridge contracts, you will likely be able to afford him. I feel Kulikov may be tradable. 4.3M is what many teams have their #4 D man making. He looked good when he was healthy and teams are hurting for depth on the back end.

Connor/Wheeler/Helle - Bridge all if possible. Best not to sign them after they all had incredibly high production which is going to be hard to maintain. See what happens after this season concludes. I love Helle, but those big boys are prone to injuries.

If chevy is open to retaining 1.2M of Masons contract (leaving 2.9M), he may fetch a return from a desperate team (carolina or NYI)

Hearing Edmonton willing to pay a steep price to move the Lucic contract. Any room in Winnipeg for a Hulking Power Forward like Looch if they added a nice piece?

absolutely no room for that contract. Though Jets would benefit from another physical forward they don't need offensive production from a player in that role.

I agree there is no room for that contract of 5 more years at 6 mill cap. Mind you the actual salary drops to 4 in year 3, 5 in year 4 and 4 in year 5. At 30 years old and with the league going fast, fast, fast, Lucic is slow, slow, slow.

He only had 34 points this year in all 82 games with 10 goals and 14 A. Pass. Boat anchor. I like him, but on the Oilers team slowing them down.

F----g computer, second time around on this one. But, boy would l like to get Tkachuk in the draft. I wouldn't mind either Tkachuk but Calagery won't part with their Tkachuk so if we could land that Tkachuk kid somehow in the draft, prepare to overpay to get that pick because those kids are awesomely annoying, feisty, aggravating players. I would overpay somehow if I could land this kid.

Don't know what the hype is all about with Trouba. Pittsburgh won with Ron Hainsey as their top pairing defenseman and Washington just won with Kempny as a top pair defenseman. Both teams established that you need two elite centres to win a championship.

and Kings and Blackhawks won multiples with some great pieces on D. New Jersey won multiple cups with no offence.

there is no black and white way to win the cup line up wise.

you keep asking for John Taveras and he cant even lead his team to the play offs. I love the guy but that has to count against him in some way like your continued Trouba under valuing

What a mess that is in Ottawa. My Lord.

Some fault also has to fall on mgmt. Karlsson must have brought up the issue with the coach or GM at some point early on or one of the other players might have. Hoffman and his significant other should have been brought in and been lectured. Jets are a very tight group so hard to see that type of thing happening here.

Karlssson will be gone. So will Hoffman. Let's hope neither of them end up in the West.

agreed - I've picked up Hoffman for a few years now in my hockey drafts and he is reliable offensive production - -- but I don't want him on my team, especially now.

The fastest way to mess up team chemistry is to make the wives/significant others unhappy. If they aren't happy, no-one is happy. If they aren't happy, the team isn't winning. See Ottawa.

In the post lockout era after 2005. Every team outside of the Blackhawks have had two number 1 centers. That means out 13 champions, 10 have had two centers that could center number 1 lines. Quick math means that 78% of cup champions since the 2005 have indicated that you need two number one centers. That percentage will go up as years go on.

Ovechkin was ridiculed for not winning a championship, even though he was a generational talent. The same way you just bashed Tavares.

Here is a thought for those who want to add a big time player - how about Trouba & Perreault for Eric Karlsson? Cap works out about the same, replaces the RHDefense lost. Perreault would fit well in Ottawa, Trouba gives a significant piece back for Karlsson.

San Jose never won with the Joes, might even throw in Marleau, Dallas never won with Benn/Spezza (Spezza's not a bad comparable for Tavares), Anaheim with Getzlaff/Kessler, vancouver with Sedin/Kessler, Sabres didn't make playoffs with Eichel/ROR, detroit nothing after 2008 with Datsyk/Zetterburg, McKinnon/Duchene for Avs were not successful as a team

Then how did we lose with shief and Stastny? How does Pitt not win every year? Common!! You don’t think I could throw out percentages for success at other positions?
