Agreed. NJD should trade for a top D man like Danny DeKeyser.

Carlson didn't get the crosscheck call that led to the Reaves goal 2 seconds later, 0% chance he gets that call in a Devils uniform

Yeah, I wish there was a left-defense version of Tavares available, but there isn't so Shero shouldn't force the issue.

I'll somewhat agree that I don't want Carlson, but it's more because I think the focus should be on a LHD. I don't, however, buy into the justification here.

With the possible exceptions of the Crosby's, Ovechkin's, etc. nobody ever sees steady, amazingly high production through the length of their contract. Down years happen. Seems like you're saying 3 potentially REALLY good years still isn't enough because there might be 4 not so good years to follow. Sorry, but this isn't Pittsburgh or Toronto or New York. Guys aren't lining up to play in downtown Newark. The Devils aren't a destination spot so, yeah, they have to overpay and swallow a bad contract or two in a few years. But at the same time the cap should continue to rise and, knowing the NHL, they'll probably be a labor dispute along the way and a buyout becomes possible. Sorry, but if the "un-tradeable" contracts like Gomez or Clarkson can be moved multiple times then I am convinced any player can be moved.

So while I'm not saying they should go grab Carlson at any cost, the mindset used here just frustrates me.

Agreed, I'd only want Carlson if it ends up being a similar situation to when Shattenkirk signed with his hometown team for a slight discount and not a huge term. But frankly if I'm Carlson and I'm smart I'm maximizing the career year I just had and am gunning for 7 years at at least $7.5mil a year, and for that I 100% agree it'd be short term gain long term pain for whoever signs him.

Carlson has always been poor at shot suppression. Hopefully he can beast mode it for 6ish more games.

LETS GO CAPS.

Nicely written Todd. It appears that the cap will be jumping to between 78-82 million for next season which will likely open the doors for more teams to overpay in free agency. Toronto and Vancouver are my likely candidates.

Someone is going to pay big for Carlson. I'd bet 8 mill per at least.
Hope it's not Chia.

I’m agreed with this. Nyquist, Howard and DeKeyser for Hall and Schneider.

Hoping they stay away from Carlson and sign de Hann he’s a left handed D which they desperately need and he will be a solid 2nd pairing defenseman plus the cost to bring him to the devils won’t be too steep

I like Carlson and he would help the team .

I think Carlson would be a fairly big upgrade over Severson so for that reason I'd be interested. Shouldn't go stupid but we aren't in a cap crunch and will have Greene and Zajac coming off the books in a couple years.

Free agency for "top" players is usually a bad idea. Eriksson, Lucic, Ladd, Okposo, Shattenkirk, have all hurt their respective teams. Though as an Isles fan I hope the Devils sign him for 8.5x7

bad GMs signing bad players to bad contracts isn't anything new.

Sure. But look at Washington. Most thought the Orpik and Niskanen signings were going to handcuff them, and they've turned out just fine. I would say 90% of UFA signings result in an overpay, yes, but not all of them doom your franchise for years to come.

In terms of Niskanen, they aren't paying attention. Since day 1, I've said he was a better defender than Carlson. His contract is kind of a steal. He's been the shutdown leader against CBJ, PIT, and TBL top lines all playoffs.

Orpik's contract in many ways did prevent the Caps from making any meaningful moves this season. He has performed pretty decently on the bottom pair though. He had a really rough game 1 though.

It's almost always the case that you're going to spend extra cash and deal with a guy getting a bit old as a UFA signing. It's the tradeoff for not giving up assets. At some point the Devils will need to get some high level talent in here to turn around the D. If I'm picking between Carlson and Calvin de Hann, I'll take my chances with Carlson.

Also, it's not like you have to keep these guys forever. Rangers moved Rick Nash with an ugly contract. Roberto Luongo got moved with his big contract. These things get dealt with....

Orpik signing probably cost the team Schmitt and forced the Johansson trade so I don't think his contract has been a boon for the Caps.
