Peter Tessier: Jets Post Mortem- a great run ends Don't be sad Jets fans, this was an amazing run and there's lots more to be excited about with this team.

This Flyers fan, who has Hellebuyck, Connor, Laine, And Big buff on his fantasy keeper team, knows that the Jets are going to be good for quite a while.

They are a very exciting team and they just ran in to a team that caught lightning in a bottle.

The Jets are a team that still make a lot of mistakes (including not so smart penalties) and it finally caught up to them. More often than not this year, they have gotten away with it, as their skill level has made up for it.

My concerns going into the playoffs were: Coaching, consistent goaltending, PK and how they would adjust to tighter spaces and frustration when they can't score. In my mind these concerns are exactly what did them in.

We have a ton of offensive skill and we rely on it too much. I noticed in the season that we were constantly shooting to score (funny to complain about), but in the playoffs and against better teams/goalies you have to change your mind-set. We need a stronger net-front presence, we need to learn how to shoot for rebounds instead of constantly trying to pick corners (miss the net), and we need shorter passes with 1-timers to slightly change the angle. The 1st goal in game 5 vs the Preds is a perfect example, Stastny went to the net and Laine shot it into traffic and we end up with a nice greasy playoff goal.

At the end of the day, I love this team and I really enjoy hearing different perspectives and analyzing this team with you guys.

Thanks for the insight Pete and cheers boys!

I agree Pete, LV is a one trick pony, just a very good trick at this time. They will come back to earth, perhaps it will not be till next year but sustaining this koolaid fueled cult like adherence to the game plan will pop, as will the Flower's stats.

Great season, such an improvement from last year and like you said, Chicago went to the Conference final and lost as well.

It will be interesting to see what July 1 brings in tweaks. Who will go, who will be signed, traded, etc. Should be interesting summer with a few questions to be answered!

Enjoyed posting on HB!

Don't be shocked if the Jets are in the SCF next season...only a couple things to tweak.

Well done Jets lots to be proud of.

The season was a great run. Better than most if not all had predicted. The Jets are still one of the youngest teams in the league and it showed in the playoffs. When they played other top teams the mistakes get magnified.

No major tweaks needed. A full season with Connor and Roslovic on the roster will be sweet. Those two along with Laine, Ehlers, Trouba, Morrissey etc are all a couple years away from entering their prime.

This isn't the end. It's the beginning

Switch goalies and Winnipeg is still playing.
Not the first team to be beaten by a hot goalie and won't be the last.
Next year the Jets will be in the hunt but the league is very even, like Tampa last year a couple of injuries and you could miss the playoffs.
Great core of young players though, lots of teams would take that roster in a heartbeat.

Here are my predictions for next season :

Enstrom, Chariot, Dano, Petan will be traded or dropped. None will be with the Jets next year. Hendricks gone as well because other teams may pay more to get him for his leadership.

Perreault may be traded to make room for Statsny although I find it hard to see where the Jets can afford to keep Statsny given budget considerations.

Niku & Poolman will make the roster

Copp OR Armia are on the fence because we will get a decent asset from the Perreault trade.

Tanev will be signed/extended. He was a big upside surprise this season.

Vesalainen has 30% chance of making the team. Only 30% because where do you put him and he may need to bulk up a bit more and get some AHL experience first.?

Trouba? Not worth $7 MM but replacements are hard to find for top four defensemen so he might just get signed and stay.

Two new assets will be gotten via free agency or trade. Both will be in the realm of the new quest for even more speed. Matt Calvert would be a good asset to acquire. Same with Riley Nash and David Perron. Pacioretty for Perreault ( plus maybe Chariot ) might make some sense for Montreal. That all being said it also makes sense for Chevy, due to possible budget constraints, to save some money and just wait to acquire the needed assets near the trade deadline as it’s a pretty reasonable assumption that the Jets will make the playoffs.

Next year’s roster ( lines may change):

Forwards

Connor – Sheif- Wheeler
Ehlers - Statsny - Laine
(New asset from Perreault trade) - Roslovic- Tanev
( New Asset ) -Little – Armia / Copp

Extras: Spacek / Appleton & Niku/Poolman

Defence

Morrissey – Buff
Poolman/Niku – Trouba
Kulikov – Myers

As for 2.0's comment on the previous thread about trading Ehlers. Yes, Ehlers did little to nothing in the playoffs and while young may be expendable. However, Chevy would be wise to not even dream of doing a trade like that until Laine is signed to a long-term contract.

So....Enstrom played with a serious rib injury and was miffed because he was scratched from Game 5 (according to the Free Press).

1. What a shocker - Enstrom sustained another injury !

2. Did Enstrom think he was helping the team by playing with a serious injury ?

No big changes are needed, although I would argue that the Jets had a fairly obvious foot speed disadvantage to Vegas and at times to Nashville.

Dont play Helle as much next regular season, think he played more than any goalie.

I responded to 2.0's earlier post as well but I did not touch on this aspect of the Laine bromance bond, but I think it is very much in play. Shipping out Ehlers might be like breaking up a, well, for lack of a better analogy, like breaking up a happy couple. I don't mean this literally, but these two are very good buddies and this could be a devastating impact for Laine who we all know gets along very well in Wpg with Ehlers.

Yes Ehlers had a tough playoff, 7 assists, no goals but he has only got better each year. I don't know, but I think keeping Mutt and Jeff together will only pay dividends.

Vesalainen and Niku help to mitigate loss of Ehlers. It's also a 'shot across the bow' of Laine to impress on him the importance of winning now.

I would be reluctant to sign Stastny and do not see the need to bring back Trouba, especially if he is looking for 6 million plus.

Stastny is an enigma, ask Colorado and St. Louis, he plays great for stretches and also disappears for them as well. He is 32 years old and is a declining asset. As far as Trouba is concerned. Vegas and the last two cup champs the Penguins have proven that you don't need big names or money on D to make the finals. You need steady D that plays a simple game.

So I what I am saying is that we trade Trouba, Little and Vesalainen to Florida for Barkov.

Trading Ehlers is the equivalent of the Oilers trading Hall and Eberle. Dumb move!

One thing people on this board keep forgetting is that Appelton, Roslovic and Petan dominated the AHL as the top line. Would not mind seeing the three together up here to see what they can do. Could be an intersting preseason project.

Ross will like your Barkov suggestion as I think he is a strong supporter.

Well, apparently Toby is po’d at Maurice for scratching him in game 5. Apparently he was suffering with a serious rib issue through the series and is miffed so he high tailed it out of the rink without talking to media today.

Waaa......... Aurevoir Toby! Before you leave Wpg, you should give back half of this years salary.

Stastny over his career has the same numbers as little. Is two years older and may want more money. Did anyone else notice he was absent in Vegas series? Little actually outplayed him in that series. Do not re sign, we need that money elsewhere. Also I want Roslovic to start next year as a top 9 Center!! Him and Connor will be great together!!

I now predict Trouba signs a 4 year deal at 6-6.5 mil per. I don’t see the jets and Trouba’s Camp coming together money wise on 6-8 year type deal, this will be the compromise. I can live with it. It will also mean now we don’t have to bridge Morrisey and will sign Josh to a 6-7 year deal around 5.5.

If we can trade Myers to the oilers and throw in one of Petan, Armia, Dano or Appleton to get the 10th overall pick. I’d be jumping for joy!!!!!!! Draft the best available D at 10 and run!!!!

Niku is available at LD and deserves the chance. I can see morrow signing a one year minimum type deal as a healthy scratch depth LH D. Also both these guys are cheap!
