Justin Lowe: Long Weekend Recap Thoughts A few things happened over the weekend that is worth noting. There was the Hossa "I'm not going to play hockey anymore" news, 4 announced signings by the Blackhawks and a couple of road losses from the IceHogs.

Nice write-up Justin, and props for calling out JJ as first on the Hoss story.

Do these signings impact the draft at all? I wouldn't think so, but maybe the goalie signing...

Also, Wiz has NYI taking Dobson and Veleno at 11 and 12. If they are available there, should Stan trade the #8 as part of a package to get those two picks? 8, 27 plus?

Justin said (discussing Hossa's recapture penalty): This seems strange, but it's a loophole that the NHL can't do anything about.

This was a legal contract, accepted by the league, when signed and executed in the summer of 2009.

After the fact - by a couple of years, IIRC - the league said that Hossa's and similar contracts would be retroactively subject to recapture penalties.

Something could have been done about it.

Scary thought.
Remember the 2 Russians we drafted in a row in about the same consecutive spots about a dozen years ago (Vorobiev and Yakabov). That was a disaster. Maybe just stick with the higher pick and gamble with #27.

Here in Finland the HIFK´s fans are really raving Kevin Lankinen. I know nothing about him cause I don´t watch FEL that much but they say Kevin is a great kid with good personality to start with. And like I wrote earlier many of those fans thinks Lankinen is one of the best goalies ever played in HIFK. Maybe Lankinen could be another Antti Raanta? We´ll see.

I haven't heard any specifics if they have a deal in place but my gut says that it's more 70-30 in favour of him being acquired by a team looking to hit the cap floor.

There aren't any teams who need help getting to the cap floor. Most are already above it for next year. The rest are like Carolina. 8m-ish under, but have to sign another 13 players who will actually play; so will easily be above it once they have 23 guys signed.

I don't think Dobson will be available by #11, and Veleno might be gone by then as well.

Dobson is in the group after Dahlin+Boqvist, with Bouchard and Hughes. So he's anywhere from the 3rd to 5th best defenseman available.

Veleno is arguably the best center available, and in the past ten years a center has been taken in the first 3 picks every year except for 2012, where Grigorenko went #12 overall.

You bet... always try to give credit to those breaking these stories.

It will be interesting to see what the next step is for Hossa and his contract. I say he's gone once the cap is announced and gives the low-cap teams time to figure out a deal to help them hit the floor.

Essentially, the higher the cap number (obviously the better for spending) but gives the Hawks more options for those lower spending teams. I will have a blog on this soontime.

Stan is asleep at the wheel again...he could have addressed the back-up goalie situation but he was too busy signing guys who won't play with the club for at least 2 years.

It's a well known fact that you can never have enough depth on defense. Good job by Stan locking up 459 d-men.

"The Hawks have 459 defencemen signed for next year. "

With Justin Williams and Steve Ott still on the board. Yep that was a great draft year for us.

The days of teams under the cap floor are gone. With the generous contracts handed out by teams like Chicago, even the bottom feeders are starting to pay to keep their better players. Plus, as you stated, a lot of teams that appear to have cap space have a lot of free agents to re-sign.

Dobson seems to be a better stay at home D then O driven. Which is not bad. We need more anchor on the blue line. Veleno is intriguing Ill give you that. I know the D is a mess, but how much of that falls on Q for blender and schemes? Still think Stan nabs a D with that 8 pick.

Just carry over the discussion from last blog. I wouldn't not be surprised if the Hawks don't resign Clendening. I think he was pretty much just brought in to help the Icehogs run. I dunno if he ever makes the jump to the NHL full time. There is something to be said that he has played for more teams in his first 86 games then most do in their whole career.

- Drafted by Chicago 36th overall.
- Played well in the AHL scoring a lot of points.
- Traded to Vancouver (Forsling) after 4 games 1G 1A (where he got his first career goal on the PP vs Calgary on his first NHL shot).
- Split the rest of his season between Vancouver and their AHL team.
- Traded to Pittsburgh and split time between AHL/NHL
- Traded to Anaheim, never actually played for the Ducks and was claimed off waivers by Edmonton after two weeks.
- Played 20 games with the Oilers and then he went UFA
- Signed by the Rangers. (Played 31 games)
- Signed his first one way contract with Arizona, played 5 games before clearing waivers and going down.
- Traded to Chicago in the Panik deal.

I won't try to predict what Stan will do, but just wouldn't surprise me either way. Seems bad that no coach/GM has really wanted to keep him around and he passed waivers last season. He is likely to go down in history as an AHL legend.

I look at it this way, who is willing to loose 5.2M in cap space a year for $3.0M and gain an asset in the form of a player or draft pick? So is a development player worth cap space you may never use? And I am sure the hawks would throw in the 3.0M.

Look at the path Darling took. Nothing says he cant help in some way. Got to take your hat off to his determination for riding the waiver roller coaster.

Absolutely if could happen, but I was just saying he could easily be moving on to his next organization in hockey soon. I would not be shocked at all if he is UFA this summer.

Anyone have thoughts on what they are going to do for a backup net minder? Do we spend money on a FA or do they see if Delia/Forsberg can handle the job? And do we know if CC is going to be able to come back???

Tough call.

I would think about it. It's a deep draft though, I personally would like to see them hold on to that pick.

However, it all depends on the greater plan this offseason. How much money do they need this year.

There is still value to teams that may be given the choice between shedding a large payroll contract for one that is giving them cap space on paper. The cap floor could be close to 60 million soon and while I don't have the official info, I've seen data that some teams are still losing money on their balance sheet annually as of last season.

There can be situations too where a team might be going for a rebuild and shedding salary. Ottawa for example, if they do still move Karlsson and Bobby Ryan like they were apparently trying to do, they might want a contract like Hossa's to just gain cap space.
