Everyone laughed at the team GMGM put together at the beginning of they year.

Florida and CBJ paid Vegas to take Marchessault and Karlsson.

Florida fired a good coach, and Vegas snatched him up.

The only guys that Vegas took that people thought would be good were Fleury and Neal. Leafs fans were talking about how a 2nd for Miller would be too much, because he was basically Carrick.

Vegas has great luck/scouting, and a bunch of teams didn’t know what they had in their rosters.

This. They weren't the only ones either. Tuch was bribe money too. Every team that gave them a pick for essentially nothing created this monster. Vegas was entitled to only one player per team. The 11th best in most cases. In some (for teams with stars on ELCs) even lower down the list.

Pittsburgh gave Vegas a 2nd rd pick to take Fleury. Vegas got the better of the two Penguins goalies and a high draft pick.

They're done.

They had a great start, but now they are playing to my expectations for them this season. I realize they are dealing with a lot of injuries right now, but they are not in 'win now' mode by any means.

Donaldson gets traded at the deadline for high-end prospects because the 3rd baseman of the future is tearing up the minors right now. The Vlad era is rapidly approaching, I don't know how they will be able to keep him off the roster next season.

They're done. Blow it up and rebuild. Same with the Raptors. Plan for 5 years from now when LeBron is on the decline.

For once in history, the other Toronto teams (except maybe TFC) should look to the Leafs on how to rebuild. Truly strange times.

It's also because the entire team are "rejects". Coaches and GMs fight to make their teams believe it's "us versus them" but in Vegas, they have that situation built-in to their entire roster. Even their deadline acquisitions were "rejects". They have lightning in a bottle right now and it looks like it's going to be Lightning vs. Lightning in the Finals.

All that being said, the NHL cinderella stories almost always lose in the Finals. '91 Minnesota (North Stars), '94 Vancouver, '96 Florida, '99 Buffalo, '02 Carolina (the 1st time), '03 Anaheim, '04 Calgary, '06 Edmonton, '07 Ottawa, '10 Philadelphia, '12 New Jersey, '16 San Jose, '17 Nashville; you go down the list and year after year, the team that defied the odds, lost in the Finals.

Could that change this year? Definitely but the Lightning look like they're firing on all cylinders after sleep walking through the first two games of the ECF.

Certainly skates better than most.

Really is great to see the Marlies doing so well and knowing that Dubas put that team together. It's just the AHL but it's encouraging that in a short period of time, he's put together a very good collection of players that could become contributors to the Leafs in the future.
