Carol Schram: Vancouver Canucks' Bo Horvat & Anders Nilsson both advance to Worlds semis After a wild quarterfinal day at the IIHF World Championship in Denmark, the Vancouver Canucks' Bo Horvat and Anders Nilsson are both through to the semifinal after Canada beat Russia 5-4 in overtime and Sweden edged Latvia by a score of 3-2.

thank you for your work and your dedication to our canuck blog despite being off season and being in the thick of international play. Your canuck passion is obviously strong!

It appears nilson is better than his season here showed. He DID have a great start to the season however with 2 shutouts in 3 games. It seems some team drama occurred that affected several players including both goalies. Rumors have been ongoing for years about a divided room with the sedins being the major component of 1 side. It should be interesting to see how things are without them and a new captain. I don't think there is any other option than horvat, barring a blockbuster FA signing.

I wonder what the timeline to name a captain is, perhaps following training camp?

Probably not until they start exhibition play after training camp. Usually it's coach/management decision that they make after the last camp practice. That's how they did it with the Sedins, I don't see it being done any differently this year, I expect Bo to get the C with Sutter and Edler getting As or else it'll be a four man rotation with Gudbranson getting an A as well.

Truthfully, I think with Henrik gone, we'll have a little more respect (i.e. less running Horvat/Boeser/etc.) because the group is much younger and has more of an edge to it. You won't see Horvat or Sutter skate away from a scrum or go to the bench as a fight is developing.

thats what I was saying, after training camp. By then FA's have been signed etc, roster is usually set.
However if JB has no intention of pursuing FA like JT etc then name the captain prior to the draft. Why? It will give horvat (assuming its him) time to mentally prepare for the captaincy prior to the season

I think they wait anyways, you need to see how Horvat responds at training camp when he's now the actual focal point/go-to guy without the Sedins there to take the pressure off of him. He may not be ready to be the captain yet, and to be fair it's not like the Canucks NEED a captain, they can easily roll with a 4 man A rotation as many teams do for a year.

I've said it before, I don't want JB to go after JT (not that I think Tavares would sign even if JB pulled a Gillis and offered a massive overpay contract), I want the team to sign/trade for stopgap players for 1-2 years and then next year go hard for EK or OEL (assuming both get to FA (which doesn't look likely for OEL)). We need a stud defenseman in the worst way if we ever want to be relevant

I recall 1 team going with 4A's and no C, not many. I also cannot recall what team that was. I'm guessing the oilers?

Yes we need a stud D... by formula. We have a premiere shutdown D in Tanev for shot suppression. A stud defensive D that hits big and an offensive D or 2 would be the perfect prescription for our team. Sautner is a great addition, really settled things down.

Defense is the key going forward for us, especially after losing hamius, sbisa and tree in the last year.

I hope Canucks reach out to Brandon Tanev this summer for 4C . I like his game. Other than that I am hoping for trades.

There is no good stuff. The room was never divided, just a few that got frustrated and they were shown the door. But never two opposing sides.

Pudge Hutton says he will have a bounce back year. He says he takes offense when he hears that he is fat. Good thing we call him Pudge instead of lard ass.

Same. He's the kind of guy you want in the playoffs. Lots of character
